Shou's POV
~~
Late that night, I slip into Gackt's room.
The mirror's in an outer-chamber so as long as we're quiet, I should be safe.
I pull the curtain back, whispering Saga's name.
Until he finally comes over.
"Shou? What's wrong?"
"One of the guards caught me on the stairs earlier. And then they found tracks in the queen’s old room. I've got a mirror, but I don't have any more time."
"I understand. You have to be careful. You can’t help me if you get caught, right?"
"I'm gonna leave for a while. Not too long tho. I'll be back as soon as I can. And we'll get you out. But I didn't want to leave without talking to you."
"Go, then. And be careful."
Before I get a chance to say any more, I hear a noise.
"Hurry Shou," Saga says "Someone's coming."
I drop the curtain back into place and duck behind a chair.
Holding the pack with the book and mirror in it in front of me.
I peek from behind my hiding place.
It's the king.
He walks over to the mirror.
Throwing back the curtain.
But luckily Saga's already moved away.
The king steps closer to the mirror.
"Boy. Wake up."
Gackt takes a drink from the glass in his hand.
Knocking on the frame with his other.
Saga slowly comes into view.
"Ah, there you are. Shall we play?"
"Magic mirror," Saga cringes as Gackt begins speaking again.
"Magic mirror that I see, tell me true. Is there any fairer than me?"
Saga suddenly stands taller, biting his bottom lip.
"Come now. You know you have to answer," Gackt gloats.
Saga drops his head.
"It's true, my king that you are fair. But there is one, beyond compare."
Saga forces himself to stop.
Hands clenched at his sides.
"Who? Who is this person of which you speak?" the king countered.
Saga shakes his head.
"No," he grits out "you can't make me."
"Well, see about that."
The king looks hard at Saga, and then he turns around, heading for his chambers.
I wait a moment after the door closes, making sure that he is indeed gone.
I reach the mirror, tossing the curtain back.
"Saga?"
"Shou. You better hurry," he says, coming back into view.
"What will he do?"
Now I don't want to leave him.
Not after hearing the way the king speaks to him.
"He can't do anything. Not to me. Not really. But he can do something to you if he finds you here."
"Ok. But I will be back. And soon, too."
I place my hand on the glass.
Saga reaches up, touching it.
"Be careful, Shou."
I nod once, before letting the curtain fall back in place.
Knowing that I'll return as soon as possible.
I slip quietly out of the castle.
Thinking that whatever happens, it'll be worth it.
But only if I manage to set Saga free.

I have no idea where I’m going.
I just know I have to leave the castle.
Before someone finds out.
Before the king puts it all together about Saga and me.
There's always the forest.
No one ventures into the forest.
The locals think it's haunted.
I don't know what I think.
But it seems like a good place to hide.
So I make my way along the road.
I'm almost there when I hear the sound of hoof-beats behind me.
Coming fast.
I turn around.
It's a large party.
They're wearing the king’s livery.
I start running.
I've only got a few more yards before I pass into the trees.
I burst thru, waiting for someone to grab me.
But they've all stopped.
Not entering the woods.
I start walking again.
Hoping they're scared enough not to let anyone order them into following.
I also hope that whatever's supposed to be in here isn't real.
Or at least it isn't really dangerous.

It’s not long before I reach a clearing.
With a house in the middle of it.
It looks quiet.
I make my way cautiously to the door.
Remembering what happened to Saga, I knock on the door.
A moment later, I hear movement on the other side.
A crack appears in the door.
“What do you want?” a gruff voice asks.
“Um..just a place to stay for the night. Do you have a stable or something?”
The door shuts.
I hear voices.
Then the door opens all the way.
“You don’t have to sleep in the stable,” the smiling man says, motioning me to come inside.
“We’ve got plenty of room here. I’m Kai. That’s my brother, Aoi.”
“Thanks. I’m Shou.”
I look at the two men.
Kai’s smiling: open, warm and inviting.
Aoi’s got his arms crossed.
Almost scowling at me.
“What brings you to the woods?” Kai asks, leading me farther into the house.
“I needed to get away.”
“Who’re you running from?” Aoi asks.
He’s obviously the one that was talking thru the door.
“Castle guards,” I mutter.
And Aoi’s demeanor changes.
“Well, that’s a different story. Have you eaten yet? Kai’s quite the cook.”
Suddenly, I’m welcome.
I guess he doesn’t like guards.
Or royalty.
