Reita's POV
~~
It's been pretty easy to forget that my parents are home.
I haven't changed any of my routine.
I'm still practicing with the guys after school every night.
We're still playing at the club on Friday nights.
No, nothing's changed just because they're back.
In fact, Ruki's coming home with me after tonight's gig.
He's spending the weekend, like usual.
Which means my bass goes home with Kai.
Even that's normal for us.
But what's not normal is how quiet Ruki's being while the rest of us pack up our gear.
That has me just a bit worried.
Finally finished, we all head out together.
Saying our goodbyes outside.
Ruki's waiting next to my motorcycle.
The pack with his clothes slung across his back.
As I get closer, I see that he's biting at his lower lip.
That's a sure sign that he's worried about something.
And I think I know what it is.
I place my hands on his shoulders, turning him to face me.
"Stop thinking about my parents. They don't matter."
His eyes widen in surprise.
"How can you say that? They're your parents. It's their house. What if..." he stops, dropping his head before continuing. "What if they say I can't stay?" he finishes softly.
"Is that the only thing bothering you?"
"Isn't that enough?"
He drops his pack to the pavement.
Moving back to lean against the wall.
I slowly follow him.
"Are you allright?" I ask, reaching for his hand.
He laces his fingers with mine, smiling shyly up at me.
"You'll laugh."
"I'll probably do a lot of things," I smile back at him, "but I'll never laugh when you're being serious. I promise."
"It's your folks. Everytime I think about them, I hear music. The kind they play in those cheap-ass, low-grade horror movies when they show the bad guy for the first time."
I promised not to laugh, and that's the only thing stopping me.
Except I keep seeing my father wearing a big black hat and one of those long fake mustaches.
Complete with him twirling the end and laughing one of those 'bad guy' laughs.
I describe it to Ruki, hoping it'll make him laugh.
It does, but only for a minute.
"That'd be funny if it wasn't so creepy."
I sigh, "You're right. It is creepy."
His eyes seek out mine. "Your folk's are gonna cause us trouble. And we really don't need any more of that."
I nod, "So, how are we going to handle it? And more importantly, them?"
"No clue," he mutters sadly.
I pull him in for a hug. "Just promise me one thing, allright?" I wait for his nod before continuing. "Promise me that we'll talk about it. Anything that bothers you, I wanna know."
"Okay. I promise."
I lift his chin so he meets my eyes.
"I mean everything. No matter how small or silly you think it is, you're gonna tell me, right?"
He rolls his eyes before saying "Yes. I promise. Can we go now?"
I give him one last squeeze before I let him go.
By the time we reach the house he's back to his usual talkative self.
Which lasts all of about three seconds after walking in the door.
Because there are my paremts, coming down the hallway from different rooms.
My mother flashes a smile, "Hello Ruki. It's nice to see you again."
But before he can answer, my father speaks up.
"I need to have a word with you, Akira. In my den, please."
It sounds like a request, but we all know it's an order.
I give Ruki's hand a squeeze before letting go.
"Go on and get cleaned up. This'll be quick."
He nods, smiling reassuringly at me.
Even tho I know he's worried.
I follow my father into his den.
Closing the door behind me.
"Mind telling me what this is all about?" he starts.
"Sure. If I knew what you were referring to."
We both stop as the door opens again.
Letting my mother in.
"I think I should be a part of this. Don't you?"
The last was directed at my father.
"By this," my father practically ignores her, sticking to what he thinks is more important, "I mean the crap on your face and the rest of that get-up you have on."
"I'm in a band."
"Honey, that's great," my mother says walking over to give me a hug.
I'm not sure which surprises me more.
The show of affection or the genuine pleasure in her voice.
"We're only playing a local club on Friday nights. It's not that big of a deal."
"Well, I think it is a big deal." She turns to my father "Looks like that bass was a good investment after all."
I try not to laugh at the look on his face.
He certainly didn't expect the conversation to turn out like this.
Taking a moment to re-adjust his thinking, he moves on to a new topic.
And I can see it coming before he opens his mouth.
"You told your mother that that young man is your boyfriend."
It wasn't really a question, but I answer anyway.
"His name is Ruki. And he is."
"Why is he here now?"
"He's spending the weekend."
There's no explosion, but my father does laugh.
"You've got to be kidding. Do you honsetly think we'll let your 'boyfriend' spend the night?"
I shrug, "It's not the first time."
That stops him again.
"How many times...? No wait," he holds up a hand "I don't think I want to know."
I look over at my mother, wondering how she's taking the news.
She's not frowning.
I take that as a good sign.
Turning to her, I try winning her to my side.
"Look, my grades are good. I haven't gotten into any trouble at all this year."
"And your saying it's because of Ruki?" she asks.
"Absolutely. Him and being in the band keep me too busy to get into trouble. Besides, Kai, the drummer, is big on all of us doing our best in school."
Before she gets a chance to say anything else, my father butts in.
"You can't be seriously considering this."
"Why not?" she counters. "You told him once that as long as he keeps his grades up, you really don't care what else he does. Remember?"
"That was about sports and you know it."
He's almost shouting.
I hope Ruki's in the shower or has music on.
I hate to think how worried he'll be if he hears my parents' voices raised like this.
"I don't see what the big deal is," I finally manage to interrupt them.
My father scowls at me. "You know why, so don't play dumb with me."
"You mean sex?" I laugh. "It's not like either of us can get pregnant."
He slams his fist down on his desk.
"This is serious, damnit!"
I think my mother's hiding a smile behind her hand.
I can't tell for sure, tho.
"Would you believe me if I told you we haven't been naked together yet?"
That's not really a lie, so I feel safe saying it.
"And I do mean yet. Because we will. When we're both ready."
I tell him, crossing my arms across my chest.
He's shaking his head.
I don't know if that means he doesn't believe me, or if he's just trying to piece everything together.
"Look," I step closer to the desk, "To show my good faith, how about I stop wearing this at home?"
I reach up, removing my noseband.
His eyes widen in surprise.
"That's how important Ruki is to me. What do you say?"

A/N: Ok..so I (finally) got this chapter done. After I don't know how many re-writes...I think I'm happy with it now. ANd it turned out longer than I expected it to...but then, I didn't feel right stopping anywhere else. I hate cliffhangers, too. So I didn't want to leave this chapter with one....
