So here I am. Out in the wilds of the world. Alone.
Not good, not good at all.
I’m beginning to think The Three aren’t the only ones whose sanity should be in question.
What was I thinking? Oh yeah, right. Asked by them. Couldn’t say no. Stupid me.
I’ve gotta find some traveling companions. Preferably ones with fighting skills. Really good fighting skills.
Rounding a bend in the road, I stop. Well, there’s somebody now. And look, I tell myself, he’s got a sword. And an axe. This could be good.
Or not.
What if he’s not the friendly sort? He certainly doesn’t look very friendly. Not with that scowl. And why is he scowling at his axe? What could it have possibly done wrong? So I approach, carefully, making sure not to sneak up on him. That could get really ugly really fast.
Not him, though. He’s definitely not ugly. Long black hair, pulled back in a ponytail. Gorgeous shaped black eyes. A true swordsman’s body. But not too muscular. He’s well put together. Definitely. Nice arms, too. And great hands.
So I notice details. I design jewelry, right? The more details, the better.
He’s in all black. Tight top, loose flowing bottoms with some kind of skirt-like thing flowing around his slim waist, but not below his knees. That’d probably get in the way during a fight, I think to myself.
Black and silver sword. Black and silver shield. No markings on the shield. Silver band around his forehead, like a crown. Intricate black carvings at the center. All in all, one fantastic picture.
I clear my throat to get his attention. “Hi, I’m Ruki. Umm, is there something wrong with your axe?” Smart Ruki, real smart.
“What?” Oh look, I’m not the only genius here.
“You’re glaring at your axe.” He glances at the weapon in question and looks back up at me.
“And it’s only polite to introduce yourself, since I already did”
“Oh right, I’m Aoi” he says, standing and offering his hand. After shaking it, I point back to his axe.
“It’s not mine. It’s my partners.” I look around. “No, he’s not here. The Auricks got him.”
“Well, that explains the glare. I’d be mad, too.”
He just stares at me. What is with this guy? Hasn’t he got any manners? Or even a sense of humor.
“The axe, it didn’t stop the Auricks from getting your partner, so you’re glaring at it.” I explain.
“No. It couldn’t, since he left it with me. Neither of us expected to run into Auricks here.”
Oh right, they usually live closer to the mountains.
“So, do you know where your partner is?”
“Yeah. Just peek over that boulder. But be careful. There’re a lot of them”
Going over to the boulder he pointed to, I ease myself up and look over the top. Geesh. I didn’t know there were that many Auricks in the world. Looking again, I try to find his friend, hoping he’s OK. Climbing up next to me, Aoi motions towards one side of the camp. Oh, there he is. He looks all right from here. Just tied up, with about a dozen or so guards.
Auricks are roughly man sized. Or maybe I should say the size of an average man. Me not falling in that category, being a little smaller than average. God I hate being short. Anyway, they also tend to fight with swords, axes, maces, and clubs. Basically, if it’s large and can do a lot of damage an Aurick will use it. And these looked to be carrying a full assortment of weapons. Nice.
After climbing back down and walking what seemed to be a safe distance from it, I turned back to Aoi.
“So, any ideas on how to get your friend back?”
“First, he’s not just my friend. He’s my partner. We do everything together. Well, usually” he adds when I raise an eyebrow at him. “We’ve been together for a few years, now. And second, No. I have no idea how to get past that many Auricks. Do you?” he adds, hopefully.
“Actually,” I said, thinking fast “if you distract them, I could sneak around behind and cut him free. Then give him his axe and we all hightail it out of here as fast as we can.”
“And just how am I supposed to distract them?”
“Maybe you could stand up on that boulder and start yelling? I’m sure they’d notice you”. How could anyone not notice him?
Yeah, right. Not one of my better plans. Oh wait, I don’t usually have to come up with this kind of stuff. So maybe it is one of my better plans. By default. Because it’s my ONLY plan. Ever.
I continue working my way around their camp, hoping Aoi doesn’t start his distraction too soon.
Peeking around a tree, I see I’m finally there. Just ahead of me is the Axewielder. And suddenly, the guards are all looking the same way. Which was away from me. I guess Aoi started his distraction. I start crawling forward, being careful of the axe awkwardly strapped across my back. Whatever he’s doing, he’s certainly keeping their attention. I take one of my short blades out and quietly start cutting the ropes holding Aoi’s partner in place. The guy looks around at me in surprise. At least he didn’t make any noise, I’ll give him that. Not even a squeak. As soon as I finish cutting his bonds, he starts making his way quickly and quietly back the way I came. Shrugging, I follow him.
“Come on” he says, taking his axe from me. He turns and heads towards were I left Aoi.
He’s just as good looking as his partner, I think to myself as I follow him, again.
His chestnut hair is long, but not as long as Aoi’s. Striking hazel eyes. I’d never take him for an axewielder, though. He’s slimmer than the Swordsman. Taller, too, I think. He’s dressed in black and purple. Don’t see many guys wear purple. It looks good on him, though. Real good. Especially the pants, with their asymmetrical cuts in the legs. Creamy skin peeking thru.
A thin silver coronet cuts across his forehead, with a large purple stone at the center. Large silver axe. Very large. Heavy too. Trust me on that. It means he’s stronger than he looks. A silver shield. Also no markings.
You’d never guess where either of them is from.
Halfway there, we met back up with Aoi, hair hanging loose. He looks the Axewielder over real good, looking for injuries, I guess, while tying the long black strands of hair back. The other nods and smiles. And we’re off again. Auricks aren’t overly bright, but they can be very tenacious. If they decide to give chase, we might never loose them. Course anything can distract them. Or they could just forget. Like I said, not too bright.
