For a man who had all the time in the world, Captain Jack Harkness didn’t do very much relaxing. He didn’t even sleep as soundly as the average mortal, tossing and turning and bolting awake at even the slightest noise. So the sound of the TARDIS materializing in the Hub (at this point pretty much Jack’s living room) woke him with a start.

As he quickly threw on trousers and an undershirt he found that he was terrified. Over the years he had come to realize that the Doctor never dropped by for a quick chat and a cuppa. It was always destruction, running, death, more running, and the occasional run in with a near apocalypse. The visits were never friendly. The happy moments Jack got to spend with the Doctor always came with a price. And Jack always paid them.

He pulled himself up the ladder, dressed fully and as ready as he was ever going to be. He hoped this run in with disaster wouldn’t leave him feeling horny and depressed, like so many, all right, all of the Doctor’s previous visits. He didn’t have much hope though.

He poked his head up through the hatch into his office, peering over the lip to look into the room. This was usually where the Doctor waited for him when he disturbed him at, Gods, two in the morning. However, the room was silent and empty. Jack frowned and pulled himself out of the hole.

He walked over to the window and peered through the shades. Sure enough, there was the TARDIS, sitting square in the center of the Hub. He shivered. The police box had always signaled a turning point in his life. Or at least an important event. He wasn’t sure he wanted to see her now.

He cast his eyes around the Hub, looking for the Doctor, but he saw no one. Sighing he pulled out his ring of keys, sliding his fingers around the one that he hadn’t used in so many years.

Heading downstairs he stopped in front of the ship, reveling in the feel of her intelligent aura. She purred when he reached out and stroked her side, causing him to chuckle in surprise. He wasn’t sure she’d recognize him.

Finally he braced himself and unlocked the door, peering into the depths of the TARDIS. He knew there would be a price to pay. But knew that he would pay it.
