Missing the target market

Why does Sigma advertise on the bus.  It's a chemical/lab supply company.  This bus does go from Kendall Square to the Longwood Medical area - but a majority of people on the bus are bus people -- not researchers.     Seems strange.

Well it must have worked if you noticed it... ;)

What really puzzles me is why the MBTA advertises for itself on the bus/train/whatever. That always seemed like an unproductive waste of advertising space.

They are not advertising to the riders, they are advertising to the buildings the bus drives past.

Are you talking about the ads that are inside the bus up on the ceiling, or the giant billboard style ads on the side? I'm willing to bet that more people pay attention to bus ads than most other sorts of ads. You have to look at something in order to avoid eye contact with other passengers, after all. So even if there's not a heavy concentration of researchers on the bus, maybe the ads catch the eye of people a high enough percentage of the time that it's still useful. Also, lots of students take the bus, so even if they aren't researchers now they might be someday? I dunno.

Does Sigma really need to advertise? I mean, when I think chemical, I think Sigma.
