1) They're both so nice and aesthetically pleasing. I mean, just look at that Ж!
2) They represent the "zh" sound (as in treasure) and "ya" vowel (more clipped than it is in English), respectively. Which are both nifty sounds.
3) Incidentally, Я is the word for "I".
