Housing near Yale

My nephew and his girlfriend are moving to Conn. to work at Yale. They are finding lots of discrepancies in information about the surrounding areas when it comes to housing. What areas should they avoid? Which areas are safe/better? Anyone have reliable and recent info? Thanks!

Fired off a request to a friend in the area; I'll let you know what he kicks back. Most of my friends on the East coast are in Massachusetts these days, unfortunately (though fortunately for me because Boston is AWESOME).
