Welcome to the world where you'll constantly be classified as a troublemaker/cynic/heathen/person of loose morals because you dare to *gasp* question religious beliefs! 'Tis great!
You know, the thought of an afterlife and a purpose to life is very comforting... and it was very difficult to leave that behind. I was in denial and tried not to think too hard for a long while but I just couldn't avoid the topic. One day, it just really dawned all me that I no longer believe that there is a God or Heaven or Hell. It was scary at first... and still scary now. There is no loving, supernatural deity looking out for you. When you die, your consciousness fades into oblivion, maybe after having a bout of hallucinations. There is no life after death. There is no meaning or purpose to life; our existence only happened by chance. Needless to say, it was rather difficult and uncomfortable to let go of all those beliefs... reality sucks. That's probably why religion even exists in the first place, haha.
Yeah, I'm having difficulties dealing with the "end of your life being the end of your life" thing too.
It's nice to think that we get to live on forever. But someone explained it to me like this once: a life that goes on forever actually LOSES its meaning, if you think about it. You have an eternity to figure out everything there is about the Universe, all the mystery goes away. You become idle, and pointless, bored, banal...the whole eternal life thing actually starts to seem pretty scary
Well, it's good to know that someone else is in this with me, Elaine!! Lol, are we our own Rational Response team? So many documentaries that we can talk about!
I really wouldn't say that being an atheist is the equivalent of questioning religious beliefs. It seems like when you get to that point you're pretty much done questioning, no?
Yeah, I've already come to my conclusions....I didn't wanna say it for a while. And still don't feel all that comfortable telling just anyone because religion and faith are still such pervasive parts of people's lives. But for me, it wasn't something I consciously decided to do. The topic just kept coming up, and so I decided to expand my "spiritual knowledge" and did a lot of research on a lot of different faiths.
Then one day it just snuck up on me. Sigh. Believing in God was comforting. So were heaven, and even surprisingly, Hell.

I take it from your reaction that you're not too religious yourself?

Incidentally, is it that you don't believe in God/gods/a god or that you don't believe in religion?
Super curious.
