Title: Running Out Of Ways To Make You See
Author: saboteurist
Rating: PG (Warning: Possible Character Death)
Pairing: Jonghyun/Onew
Summary: Animal Crossing
A/N: Written this afternoon; no beta, no rereading, no thoughts or opinions of others before I post, just have at it. However, do not hesitate to comment, because I love comments more than itachibana13 loves jongdage.

Jinki barges into the store and struggles against the gusts of wind to close the door behind him. He pulls up his scarf to hide his runny nose and rubs his hands together as he walks down the aisles, looking for hot pockets and eggos because Taemin apparently needs them on a daily basis. The freezer case welcomes his already numb hands and he imagines how nice a hot coffee would be right about now; he edges toward the machine by the register and sets down his items quickly. "I'll have a medium decaf," he mumbles. While she fills his cup his eyes wander to a rack of used games, a few he recognizes (such as Killzone and Modern Warfare, the kind of games that Jonghyun says are God Damn Awesome), and one he doesn't. It looks friendly, much like the games Kibum has been trying to get them all to play instead (which had generally failed, although Harvest Moon had Taemin addicted for an unreasonable amount of time). There's a big house on it with friendly looking people and friendly looking animals; across the top are big friendly letters that say 'Animal Crossing.' "Will that be all, sir?" The woman at the register says. Jinki frowns and, on impulse, tosses the game into the bag.

-

"I'm home," he calls, and finds Jonghyun in the living room sitting back on the couch, legs propped up on the ottoman. Jinki sits beside his feet and pulls them onto his lap, massaging them gently. "How do you feel?"

Jonghyun doesn't look up from whatever game he's playing until his character is knifed from behind. He curses under his breath and says, "I'm fine."

"Did the doctor visit today?"

"Yeah--" he jerks the controller back, "All he did was give me some more pills and ask me if I was feeling any better. Nothing you couldn't have done."

Jinki nods slowly and watches him play for a while.

"I bought a game while I was at the store today."

Jonghyun glances at him. "Which one?"

"Animal Crossing."

"Oh." A flash of tongue as Jonghyun wets his lips, back to concentrating on his kill streak. "Lame."

-

Taemin and Minho are the first to boot up the game, but it doesn't take long before they get bored of fishing and digging up fossils to pay back their never ending debt. They only manage to upgrade their house once before they realize it's an endless cycle, and Kibum, fearing they would choose the game over schoolwork like they had last time, convinced them to move on to other things (such as training for their comeback, which was a surprisingly valid point).

When Jinki accidentally leaves the game on, Jonghyun picks up the game for himself.

-

Jinki gets home from training to the sound of a high pitched, robotic voice and guitar. Jonghyun is in the living room with the lights dimmed, swaying from side to side with a little smile on his face. When he spots Jinki he puts a finger up to his lips, "Shh," he whispers, "KK Slider only comes into town once a week!"

"This game has got you bad, hasn't it."

"Shh!"

-

SHINee comes home while the doctor is still there. The man glances at them and then looks back at Jonghyun, who bites his lip. They whisper a bit and then the man stands, gives them a curt nod, and leaves the dorm.

Jinki is immediately at his side again. "What did he say?"

Jonghyun snorts at him and picks up the gamecube controller at his side. "I haven't been taking my pills and he was scolding me for it."

Kibum appears beside them, wagging a finger and ranting about the importance of getting better, don't you want to be able to make a comeback, or, at the very least, be able to leave the house? Jonghyun just laughs and whacks him with his controller and tells him to go turn on the gamecube.

-

"Jonghyun?"

They sit quietly, watching Jonghyun shake fruit from a tree. He picks up each piece and puts them in his pocket before saying, "Yeah?"

He digs a few holes in the ground with his shovel and places a fruit in each; a tiny sprout jumps up from them. Then he slowly makes his way back to his house (which is on upgrade number four, Taemin tells him incredulously, repeating it a few times as if that would make it any more believable) and saves the game.

Minho is the one to speak up. "I think you're addicted."

-

From then on, it was common to ridicule him for playing so much. Maybe it provided the kind of relief he needed for not being able to leave the house, but he had a dozen other games he could play. Jinki even went so far as to buy him Resident Evil 5, a game he'd seen Jonghyun pining over since last Christmas, and also one of those that Kibum would've forbidden eternally in their dorm. However, it remained untouched.

His condition progressively becomes worse.

-

A few years after Jonghyun passed away, Jinki finds the copy of Animal Crossing forgotten behind all the other games. Normally, he might've shoved it out of the way to find Duke Nukem or Dead Space, but today he decides to visit the village again and see what's up.

Weeds have grown everywhere, and the villagers keep asking where Jonghyun has been, but before Jinki can close the game, he passes by his mailbox, filled with letters and presents-- all from Jonghyun.

Most of them are the same, I got this present for you, Kibum needs to lay off, Why do you guys keep making fun of me? But the most recent ones make Jinki freeze.

The doctor says I don't have long.

I think I should tell you, but I don't want you to worry.

I lied about the pills. I don't know how you didn't see through that one.

I wish you'd come home. Does training really take this long?

The last one doesn't have a present, or a title. Like he didn't have time or was in a rush. I love you, Jinki, it says. And that's all.
