Moby Dick = Divine Phallus (God-Penis)

So I've got this deep, dark desire to read all (or as many as I can) of the 'great works of literature'. Whatever that means. Some are easy to qualify: 1984, Crime & Punishment, Moby Dick. Some are harder: On the Road probably wouldn't be considered a 'great classic' by some (even some of MY friends!), but I think it's a very interesting look ( Read more... )

I've read the comicbook version of Moby Dick. :P I remember nothing outside of "My name is Ishmael".

I can recommend plenty of classics, seeing as that's all I read for a major part of my life. :)

I love Kerouac, but I found it really hard to read 'On The Road' cover to cover. Have you been to Jack Keruouac St. in San Francisco btw? And Cafe Vesuvio?

No on both counts; sadly my experience with the Beats lies only with the written word thus far.

On the topic of Moby Dick, here are some more quotes to remember:

"He tasks me; he heaps me; I see in him outrageous strength, with an inscrutable malice sinewing it."

"...and I'll chase him round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom, and round perdition's flames before I give him up."

there's more, but my computer desk decided to be retarded, so I'll have to put them up later.

Excellent words. I love the style of the old classics. *adds Moby Dick to to-read list*

Kerouac Alley and Cafe Vesuvio is located very near City Lights book store: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v15/schmi/San%20Francisco/city_lights_frisco.jpg
