"Wicked" by Gregory Maguire - This has already been made into a Broadway production, but I think a movie would be awesome. It's another take on the Wicked With of the West.

"Until I Find You" by John Irving - I actually havn't even finished reading this one yet, I've been working on it since Christmas. But it's a really good story of a boy who never knows his father (which turns out to be all his mother's doing) and how his father's womanizing legacy haunts him. Oh, and his mom is a quasi-lesbian tattoo artist. You really should read this if you havn't already.

I absolutely love the John Irving suggestion. His works seem pretty easy to adapt and there's always a lot of detail that would be awesome to see on screen.

I second The Giver idea.

also, Goodnight Mr Tom, anything by Ray Bradbury (i think we've had the love of Dandelion Wine conversation before) or possibly something along the lines of The Poisonwood Bible.
