Surely they can\t compel you to do an evening thing with 1 day of notice! What if you had kids or something else planned?!

And what exactly are they going to do if you quite rightly tell them to get stuffed?

Said early evening do begins within normal work hours but not much before "home time" - I seriously doubt I can get away from work and over to Battersea in time.
