Series:
Tales of the AbyssPoint in canon: Post death.
Character Background and Personality:
Asch was born in the kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear as Luke fon Fabre. His name, "The Light of the Sacred Flame" marked him as the foretold scion of Lorelei. Though no one knows it other than Van, he was born with the unique power to create a Hyperresonance by himself. Duke Fabre and his wife Lady Susanne raised their son to be the picture of perfect nobility, as he would one day marry the princess, Natalia, and become king of Kimlasca. Though forced into their engagement as children, the two of them had no objections to the match. In fact, Asch proposed of his own free will when they were only children, and that promise continued to support him even in the darkest of times later in his life.
In time though, his comfortable life and promising future was shattered, when a ten year old Luke was kidnapped by the man that he trusted the most: his mentor, Commandant Van Grants. After supposedly months worth of tests and experiments deep in the bowels of Choral Castle, a replica of himself was made and sent back to Baticul in his place, while Van took Asch back with him to Daath. Still the child pleaded and begged to return to his family and his home, but Van "regretfully" informed him that they no longer needed him, because his copy had filled that role. His family and friends did not need him, anyone who played the role of "Luke" was sufficient.
Refusing to believe Van's words, the youth broke out of his prison and fought his way desperately back the capital of Kimlasca, Baticul. He suffered through repeated beatings, a deadly marsh, and multitudes of monster attacks with only one thought in mind: "I must make it back, everyone is waiting for me." But to his horror, there was no longer a place for him at his home. No open arms or even a search party. His infant-like replica had completely replaced him in the hearts and minds of those he held dear. Instantly the child broke into tears and with Van close behind he quickly played the role of comfort and strength for the distressed boy.
From that point on Luke became loyal to no one other than Van and was given a new name "Asch" - The Charred Remains of the Sacred Flame. His new master did well in raising Asch to hate the world that he felt had abandoned him. Van raised the boy as an Oracle Knight from then on, keeping him isolated from most of the Order of Lorelei all the while honing the boy's skills. Eventually earning a place as a God-General and Commander of Special Operations, by the time the game actually starts, he has gained a reputation for being quick to anger, brutal in battle and always striking to kill.
His reputation is soon confirmed when he finally sees his replica again seven years later during a mission aboard the Tarturus to recover Fon master Ion. The sight of the clone cowering in fear over his own kill enraged Asch and In a fit of disgust, he chides his replica with "If you're so afraid of killing others, just throw your sword away, failure!" He then proceeds to use an ice Arte to render both the red head and Tear unconscious. Immediately after he reveals himself to Jade he gives the command to have them killed, but to Asch's dismay a fellow God-General reminds him of his orders not to kill Luke so for the time he settles for locking the waste in a cell on the Tarturus.
For awhile he leaves the replica be and works behind the scenes but Luke's peace is short lived. By now, Asch has become suspicious of Van's plan and though he hates to go against his memory the boy slowly starts to realize the man may be more mad than a visionary. It's then that he devises a plan to put his replica to use. With the help of fellow God-Generals Dist the Reaper and Arietta the Wild, they lure Luke into a trap at Choral Castle. It is there that he uses Dist's "scientific genius" to open Luke's fon slots to his own, essentially linking them together. The reason behind this was so he can keep track of Van through Luke. With the link open Asch is able to hear and see everything his replica does he can even go so far as to control his body and hear what he's thinking if needed.
With his new means of spying in place, Asch continues to working under Van's orders, silently observing the man while continuing his role as perfect solider. Under his orders, it isn't long until Asch is lead into another encounter with his replica, only this time the noble finally sees the face of his original. It's from this point on that Asch starts putting the new fonic connection to use. At first testing it by scaring the little pest, making him draw his sword on Tear.
Sadly what Asch didn't take into account was Luke's stupidity and blind loyalty to his master. Too distracted by an attack from a swarm of Oracle Knights, he was unable to properly control the idiotic replica's body, and he refused to listen to Asch's words. Unable to stop Luke from using his hyperresonance, Van succeeded in forcing Luke to destroy the city of Akzeriuth along with it's citizens.
Furious and disgusted by his failure, Asch manages to escape from Van once more to confront his trouble making replica in Yulia City. It's there that Asch bluntly reveals to Luke that he is nothing but a replica of him. Needless to say the already distraught teen doesn't take the news well. In a rage Luke stupidly challenges Asch and the original eagerly takes him up on the offer. His superior skill and desire to kill the other lead the God-General to an easy victory and leaves his replica unconscious.
Afterwords, he allows his replica to watch through his eyes as he takes his former companions back up to the Outer Lands. Even though he can't really hear what Asch is thinking all the time, they two converse while the original takes over Luke's role in the party. He takes advantage of the party's help to find out what Van has in mind. It's in Wyon Cavern where he finds that Van intends to make a replica of the entire world, and he forces Luke out of his head before dropping off his replica's companions at Daath.
Asch continued to work behind the scenes to stop Van, his path occasionally crossing with Luke, who had rejoined with his companions to do the same. The most notable of these encounters is in the Zao Desert, where he asks Luke if he's been having any hallucinations lately (implying that he's been suffering from them, or expressing concern that neither of them have). He also appears again in Baticul after Luke and Natalia were captured to rescue them, though he claims he only did it because Ion told him to (Ion reveals that while he did ask him to help them, it's implied that Asch was a little too quick to be of assistance), and also gives the group a book later on in Belkend that aids them in their efforts to lower the Outer Lands. He appears yet again in Sherdan to give Natalia the courage she needed to keep going, and also revealing to her that he never forgot the promise they made to each other.
It is Luke that ends up confronting Van in the end (or at least what seems like the end), as Asch was injured too badly from a previous encounter against him. Even injured, however, Asch didn't sit still, going to the Radiation Gate to assist his replica in what he would need to do after confronting Van: safely lower the Outer Lands into the Qliphoth. It is after this happens that Asch hears the voice of Lorelei, pleading for help from Van, and receiving one of the pieces of the Key of Lorelei: the Sword of Lorelei.
Again, Asch continues to work away from his replica, though he wasn't alone per-say. He associated with the Dark Wings, a band of thieves that were notorious throughout Malkuth and Kimlasca that he's repeatedly hired through the course of the game, as well as Ginji, the pilot of the Albiore III. Whether or not he viewed them as anything more than hired hands is questionable, though they seem to care for him, if the way that Noir of the Dark Wings pleads with Luke after Asch makes the choice to sacrifice himself and thousands of replicas in order to rid the world of the miasma seeping up from the ground is any indication. Ultimately, both original and replica end up nearly killing themselves in the attempt, though both miraculously survived.
As Van's plans start to progress, especially with the raising of Eldrant and the Replica Hod, Asch sets out to confront him, especially after the Planet Storm shield around Eldrant was disabled. After crashing onto Eldrant, he leaves Ginji behind, heading into the replicated island... only to end up getting caught up in a trap. The same trap that Luke ends up falling through not long after. To settle the differences between them, the two of them fight, and his replica ends up besting him.
Defeated, Asch tosses Luke the Sword of Lorelei, letting him escape from the trap as he ends up confronting a whole contingent of replica Oracle Knights. He finally accepts himself as Luke fon Fabre once again... before he dies during the resulting fight.
Sexual Orientation: Mostly repressed as he's had little to no time for a social life but his soft spot for Natalia leads one to believe he's closer to heterosexuality. Though his hormones show ...well never in the game he seems highly rooted in tradition. Nobility marries into nobility and creates more nobility. Also growing up in the Order of Lorelei has a bit of influence on his views of sex, since it was much like growing up in a church it has a very heavy pull on his value for tradition.
