I wanted to talk about how awesome and groundbreaking the California ruling regarding same-sex marriage is, but that was last week and right now I have more pressing matters on my mind, like being in Vancouver. Me and dad arrived on Sunday, after spending a few delightful days with my sister's family. We went to the water park in the West Edmonton ( Read more... )

Not to be a downer or anything, but you should remember to temper your expectations. A similar thing happened in 2004 and all the marriages in California were nulled afterwards. Also, there are only two states which will recognize the marriage, and I don't think it is recognized federally at all. Oh and I think they are trying to put a referendum on the next ballot to amend the constitution against same sex marriage.

Hope you have fun in Vancouver though.

I know better than to have expectations where America is concerned, but I do have hope. This situation is different from four years ago:
a) What happened in 2004, if memory serves, was the work of one guy in one city, not a supreme court ruling, and
b) Even in just the last four years, there's been quite an upswing in visibility and acceptance of teh gays.

Not to say that it won't happen, but a referendum would be wrong; the rights of minorities should not be in the hands of the majority.

Anyhow, thanks! I'm sad I won't be able to make it for Toronto Pride...maybe you can visit me though? (Vancouver Pride is the end of July/beginning of August, but of course you could visit any time)

Silly LJ code.

I should also specify that what would be groundbreaking, if we can actually get it to stick (and there's no guarantee that the ruling will) is that California will be offering marriages to couples that live out of state - Massachusetts doesn't do that.

On the other hand, there are going to very, very few states that recognize these marriages as legal, so California will get a nice influx of tourism money and the couples will go back to their own states and have no new legal rights. Again, a step forward, but unfortunately we're still leagues behind where we should be.

Right that about the mayor of San Francisco, that's what I thought it was. Thanks for the clarification.
And you're right that it doesn't mean much yet in practical terms; still, the fact that steps are being taken at all, even baby steps, is hugely gratifying to me.
Thanks for replying! ^__^
