CHARACTER INFO
CHARACTER NAME: Hidan
SERIES: Naruto Shippuden
PERSONALITY: Hidan is rude, disrespectful, crude, profane, and loud. He cusses a lot (and worse and worse, depending on what fansub you watch), and honestly doesn't care what people think about it. He's rude to everyone, including his partner- Kakuzu, and to the (apparent) Akatsuki leader, Pein. I tend to think that he's been disrespectful all of his life. It cannot be stressed enough how little respect Hidan has for, well, pretty much everyone.

The only thing that is sacred to Hidan is his god- Jashin, whose commandments he gladly follows. He doesn't mind following the guidelines of the religion (which include mass slaughter), and probably even enjoys a great deal of it. He has a mild respect for those of other faiths, but not by much at all. To him, the greatest flaw in character is to have no faith at all- or worse, to value something like money higher than a god. This led to frequent arguments with Kakuzu.

Rated as a 3/5 in intelligence, Hidan isn't necessarily the sharpest crayon in the box. In fact, he's a bit dumb sometimes. That's not to say that he's an idiot, but he just sometimes doesn't realize an obvious trap until it's too late. That's not to say he doesn't have his moments- he's not an idiot all the time, but he's just...average.

He's not used to acting alone- he's always had either the cult or Kakuzu to back him up. This is why he seems nervous at times when separated from Kakuzu. Still, he likes to put on an image of self-reliance and asks Kakuzu to stay out of his fights. He also likes to act more confident than he actually is, and when the pair are alone is shown teasing Kakuzu about how Kakuzu really likes him. To me, this shows a small bit of playfulness that he hasn't quite grown out of, but also a bit of insecurity.

He often thinks more of himself than he should- his immortality has taken away any fear of death that he may have had, and thus he tends to think that he can take on more than he actually can.

Hidan is also very violent- having shown a leaning toward Jashinist ways as a teen, and often taking sparring too far as a child. It is true that the Jashinist tenants of endless slaughter certainly helped to make him more violent, he already was a bit of a problem to start with. He is also a sadomasochist- shown greatly enjoying the inflicting of pain and the experience of pain itself when linked to another person. When not linked, however, he tends to react (somewhat) normally to pain, complaining.

And yes, complaining. He could be a gold medalist in it.
TIMELINE: After he is trapped in a hole in the ground.
CANON+AU BACKGROUND: Hidan grew up in the village of Yugakure, what was once a shinobi village. He grew up in a rather normal family with no siblings and was taught how to fight at a young age- something he took advantage of on the other children of the village. He had lots of behavioural problems as a child, getting into fights because of his short temper. He was trained as a shinobi and this was one area in which he excelled- despite not being too terribly bright and having no nature, he took to the martial arts. He was especially gifted in taijutsu. He would take sparring matches too far, sometimes breaking the limbs of his supposed "opponents".

He had loose beliefs as a young teen and would often kill animals as "sacrifices" to a god he had no name for. He "discovered" Jashin when some visiting tourists brought rumors of the religion with them. After this, he would kill things in the name of Jashin, despite not having any other information on the religion than that Jashin condoned endless slaughter.

Hidan, disgusted with his town turning into a peaceful tourist spot, believed that shinobi were trained to kill and that his town was deteriorating into nothingness. He ended up slaughtering his neighbors one night when he was sixteen, and then ran away from home. He carried very little with him, but sought out the seat of the Jashin religion. The cult was small, roughly twenty-five members, including the cult leader and elder members. He lived there with other members of the cult for several years- learning the sacred curse jutsu and studying the commandments of the religion. The group moved around often, slaughtering wherever they went.

He excelled in everything and was selected for experimentation with a newly developed jutsu- one that could make him immortal. Five others had been selected to be tried for this jutsu, and five others died as a result of it- Hidan was the only human that had survived it. The first person he killed with his newfound power was a small girl kidnapped from a village they settled outside. He never hesitated in killing her, and never regretted her death. She was but a sacrifice to Jashin.

Hidan was set out from the cult, released upon the world to kill whatever and wherever he could. He was finally tracked down by Pein, the leader of the Akatsuki. Hidan, realizing that the Akatsuki would offer him a better chance to fulfill his role to Jashin, joined and never looked back. He was partnered up with Kakuzu, who had killed all of his former partners. Hidan's immortaility made him the perfect partner to Kakuzu, even if the two didn't quite get along.

The two first appeared in canon going after the jinchūriki (human vessel) of the two-tailed cat in the sewers of Kumogakure. Once she was captrured, the two moved on the to Land of Fire. Hidan joined Kakuzu in attacking a temple so that they could claim the black market bounty on the head monk's erm...head (Hidan hadn't really wanted to do this, but he begrudgingly went along). Hidan used the slaughter as a chance to complete Jashinist ritual (something that Kakuzu bitched about), and then the two went to the turn-in station with the monk's body to collect their bounty.

At the station (which was inside of a bathroom that Hidan said smelled really bad- bitch, bitch, moan, moan), Hidan waited outside and was ambushed by a group of ninjas including Asuma Sarutobi and Shikamaru Nara. Hidan was stabbed fatally, but (to everyone's shock) only commented that it had hurt. When Kakuzu emerged from collecting the bounty, Hidan told him to stay out of the fight. The fight continued until Hidan was able to initiate his curse on Asuma. Shikamaru figured out the curse after Asuma was injured, and Asuma was able to decapitate Hidan.

Much to everyone's surprise, Hidan's head started just...bitching. Kakuzu stepped in then, picking up Hidan's head and sewing it back to his body. Hidan stepped back into the curse circle and stabbed himself through the heart, fatally wounding Asuma. The fight would have continued, but the Akatsuki leader called Hidan and Kakuzu away. The two went to a secluded area, where they spent three days sealing the two-tailed cat.

Hidan and Kakuzu then traveled toward the Hidden Leaf Village to retrieve Asuma's body and collect the bounty on it. They were again ambushed, and they prepared to fight. Hidan showed a bit of insight here- using his agility to avoid Shikamaru's shadow-sewing technique for a while.

After one of Kakuzu's hearts was destroyed, the "good guys" realized that they would have to separate the pair to defeat them. Shikamaru led Hidan away for the main battle- dowing him into a forest where a trap had been set. They fought, and Hidan, thinking he had drawn Shikamaru's blood, initiated his curse and impaled himself through the heart. He soon discovered that he had been outwitted by Shikamaru, and had inadvertently destroyed one of Kakuzu's hearts. Shikamaru immobilized Hidan with exploding tags and bid him farewell, opening a pit in the ground below Hidan. Shikamaru detonated the tags, blowing Hidan to bits, and trapped the pieces of his body in the hole. Hidan swore loudly that he would kill Shikamaru by any means possible as Shikamaru buried the pieces of his body. Hidan, buried alive, was considered incapacitated by the Akatsuki, and it has been said that he is dying a slow death due to malnutrition.

ABILITIES:

I am using stats here stated officially, with some headcanon to fill in the blanks.

Ninjutsu: Hidan is rated 5/5 in Ninjutsu, but the only jutsu he is shown using is the following:

Curse Technique: Death Controlling Possessed Blood- Using his scythe or one of his lances, Hidan drew blood from his opponents. He then consumed the blood and drew the symbol of Jashin on the ground (a triangle inside of a circle). He changed appearance, his skin turning black and marked with while skeleton-like markings. As long as Hidan remained inside of the circle, any damage inflicted upon him with also be inflicted upon his target. Hidan would toy with his targets, harming himself with non-fatal wounds before finally stabbing himself through the heart.

Hidan is shown using no other jutsu, but due to his high rating, I assume that he was taught other jutsu and has simply abandoned using them in favor of the Jashin curse technique.

He also has no stated elemental nature, despite appearing in the video games. For purposes of this AU, I have no given him no nature, instead assuming that he has never had one, and all jutsu that he would have known as a child and teen were not assigned to a nature.

His immortality is also a result of an experimental jutsu, so I will list it here. Hidan is capable of surviving fatal wounds, even up to and including beheading (though his head must be connected to his body for him to control his movements). He does bleed, but is shown having no ill-effects of blood loss (and no visible wounds three days after being in a fight, but having a scar from his head being sewn back on), so I must assume that his immortality acts as an advanced healing factor, as well.

Taijutsu: This is simply fighting ability. Despite being the slowest Akatsuki with weapons, Hidan was given a 4.5/5 in fighting prowess. This is hand-to-hand and weapons combat. His chosen weapon was a triple-bladed scythe and two collapsible lances he kept under his robe. Without his weapons, Hidan is extremely agile and athletic, and could keep up with pretty much anyone in hand-to-hand combat.

Genjutsu: Genjutsu are techniques that affect the senses, rather than the physical body. He is rated a 3/5 despite never being shown using it. For purposes of this AU, I tend to blame the cult- Genjutsu is used as a replacement for drugs and the cult leaders use it on followers to help train them into submission. Despite not being one of the cult leaders, Hidan was taught basic genjutsu techniques as a child, and his time with the cult would have helped him grow more adept to a variety of genjutsu techniques (both in resisting them and allowing them to work on him).
