Well I just finished my short story for my English class. Criticize it if you want ^.^ I won't be turning it in until tomorrow night so any feedback on it will still be helpful ^.^
She woke up with a massive headache. Her arms and legs seemed to be pinned down by invisible weight. She tried to move her arms but only managed to move her hands. The course fabric under her felt like leather. She sluggishly got up the strength to move her hand to her forehead, feeling the bandage wrapped around her head. ‘Who am I? And what the hell happened to me?’ she thought to herself as she cautiously opened her eyes.
She didn’t recognize the ceiling of the room she was in. The lights were dimmed, thankfully. As she slowly moved her head around, she realized she had no idea where she was or who she was, for that matter. She could hear some voices outside the room but they were too soft for her to hear what they were saying. As she ran her hands over her body, feeling for more bandages, a short but petite women came into the room. She squinted against the bright light from the hallway.
“Oh good, you’re awake. We were getting worried about you, Sanya.” The stranger said as she brought a mug of warm liquid over to her. “Drink this, you’ll feel better.” The stranger helped Sanya sit up so she could sip the drink. Sanya took the drink, but did not drink it yet. She didn’t know if she could trust this stranger.
There were so many questions running through her head. ‘Who am I? Where the heck am I? What on earth is going on?’ Sanya stared curiously at the steamy liquid, unsure if she should drink it or not.
“Drink up.” The nurse commanded as she helped Sanya timidly take a drink of the liquid. Instantly, the throbbing in her head began to lessen. Sanya was amazed at how quickly the medicine was working the pain out of her body. She took another gulp of the warm liquid and her headache was completely gone. The pang in her muscles was starting to recede as well. As Sanya finished off the drink, the nurse changed her bandages. The only wound that still needed a bandage was the deep gash in her right thigh.
“Wait right here. Now that you’re awake, the assistant should see you.” The nurse bustled out of the tent, once more temporarily blinding Sanya with the light. ‘Assistant? What’s that?’ Another question added to the many floating around in Sanya’s head.
While the nurse was gone, Sanya took the time to look around the room. The walls were a bright white, amplifying the dimmed lights. There wasn’t much in the room. Some curtains that seemed to be hiding a large window, a chair, a full-body mirror, and a counter top with a few assorted things Sanya didn’t recognize. Sanya sluggishly got up and set the now empty mug on the counter, the liquid having worked it’s magic on her muscles. Sanya shuffled over to the mirror, curious as to what she looked like. As Sanya stepped in front of the mirror, she was surprised at what she say.
Her hair ran down her body to her elbows. Its loose, black curls fell across her chest like a blanket. Her eyes were a soft blue, the color of the sky on a clear day. ‘That’s where the beauty ends.’ Sanya thought as she looked over her body. The plain white shirt and shorts she was wearing in no way flattered her body. ‘They’re probably just normal clothes for people who have been injured.’ Her head, sides, right leg, and left ankle all had scratches and gashes to various degrees. There were bruises that coated her skin. She didn’t think she was all that tall. ‘The mirror is taller then me so I must be at least normal.’ Sanya smirked at herself with this thought. She didn’t know what was considered normal.
As she continued to stare at herself, the nurse came back into the room, followed by a tall male. He had to duck to get in through the doorway, and once he stood up straight, Sanya couldn’t help but stare at him. He was so tall, his short, spiked hair brushed the ceiling. He seemed to have a worried and worn face. The kind that had been through many experiences, most of them not all that pleasant.
“You should really lay back down. Your wounds haven’t healed fully yet.” His voiced was soft but at the same time, commanding. Afraid to argue, Sanya sat back down on the bed.
“Blake, maybe telling her who she is will bring back her memories.” The nurse suggested.
“I don’t want to push it. She’s probably already pushing her luck by walking around.” Blake stated firmly, staring back at Sanya. “Promise me you won’t get out of bed until tomorrow?” Sanya just nodded her head.
“Good. You need your rest, trust me. Maria will watch over you in case you need anything.” Blake left the room. Sanya realized that the nurse who had been taking care of her was Maria.
“Maria? Can I ask you something?” Sanya nervously asked.
“Sure, go ahead.”
“Who am I?” Maria was stunned.
“You don’t know who you are?”
“I didn’t know if I should say anything….. but I don’t know anything about myself….. or where we are.” Maria sat down in the chair.
“I can’t believe this. I mean, you’re a hero and you don’t even remember what you did.”
“I’m a hero?” Sanya was so confused. ‘Maybe that’s why I have all these injuries.’
“Yeah. No one really knows where you came from. There’s been a feud between Azanar, where we are now, and Lantos, the eastern kingdom. You were one of the few people to volunteer to fight. It was kind of strange, I’ll admit, but we’re glad you did. You’re an amazing fighter. You took down hundreds of the enemy with your sword.”
Sanya didn’t know what to think about this new information. She didn’t know how to fight with a sword. She didn’t even know much about herself. And it seemed like no one else knew much about her before this battle. Maria got up from the chair.
“You should get some more rest. I’m sure you’re still tired.” Maria pulled a blanket over Sanya as she settled back into the bed.
“Not really.” Sanya said as she yawned. “Ok, maybe a little.” Maria smiled at this show of resistance. Maria walked to the door and quietly shut it, noticing that Sanya’s eyes were already closed.
Sanya woke up several hours later. As she wiped the sleep from her eyes, she noticed that someone had left fresh clothes for her. ‘Must have been Maria.’ Sanya thought as she picked up the clothes and started to change.
They were rather simple. A soft, long sleeved white cotton shirt with a brown leather vest and brown cotton pants. The shoes were brown as well. ‘How plain.’ Sanya thought but she was relieved to get into some new clothes. She had sweated a lot while she slept and it felt good to get out of those clothes.
As Sanya stood from putting on her shoes, she froze. She didn’t know anything outside this room. Thousands of questions ran through her head. What does it look like? Are there more people or is it just the three of them? Sanya shook her head, trying to calm her nerves. She decided to open the curtains first, to see what it looked like outside. She took a deep breathe and opened the curtains.
The view was stunning. A sliding glass door lead out onto a small balcony. She squinted against the light shining off of all the building. There were many buildings of various sizes. She didn’t know what they were made of but whatever it was, it was very reflective. Sanya didn’t know what to think about them. She was mesmerized by all the new things. What drew her attention the most was how high up she was. She couldn’t even see the end to the building she was in.
Just then, Sanya heard voices outside of her room. She walked over to the door but didn’t open it because she heard one of them mention her name.
“Sanya doesn’t remember anything. The only things that she remembers is what has happened after she woke up.” This sounded like Maria.
“She must have hit her head sometime during the battle. It’s not uncommon for someone to have short term memory lose but never have I seen a case where they didn’t remember anything about themselves.” Uttered a deep male voice.
“There must be some way of getting information on her.” Said a female voice.
“I’ve already checked all of the databases. There isn’t anything on her at all.”
“Then maybe she’s a spy.” Croaked an old mans voice.
“I highly doubt that, father.” This voice was definitely Blake’s. “She killed so many of their people, it would be ridiculous to think that she’s a spy. “
Sanya stopped listening at this point. ‘What was I doing on a battlefield? I don’t know how to fight. I’m so confused.’ Sanya sat down on the floor, her back to the door. She didn’t know what to think of herself. ‘Am I really a hero or am I just some lowly murderer?’ She couldn’t possibly imagine killing people for fun but maybe that’s what she did before she lost her memories. No one had any information on her. It would make sense that she was someone who sneaked around and was never recorded.
‘Maybe I’m part of some unrecorded family that are thieves and murderers.’ Sanya’s thought kept traveling down this dark path. The more she thought about it, the more it made sense.
‘I just want to know who I am.’ Sanya thought as she began to sob. There were so many unanswered questions and from the looks of it, they would never be answered. ‘Unless I get my memories back. But I don’t see how that will happen. Why did this happen to me?’ Sanya couldn’t understand why everything was the way it is. Nothing made sense.
‘I just want this nightmare to be over.’ Sanya wiped away her tears as she got up from the floor and walked over to the balcony door. She fumbled with the latch for a moment before getting it open. She stepped cautiously out onto the balcony, afraid to look over the edge. Finally she mustered up enough courage to look down.
‘That would be a long fall.’ Sanya couldn’t stop her mind from racing. ‘What am I thinking? This is crazy.’ She closed her eyes, letting the soft breeze blow through her hair.
‘I don’t want to deal with this anymore. The questions are too much to take.’ Her whole body was shaking as she stepped up on the railing of the balcony. ‘I wish you all the best.’ She thought as she closed her eyes and pictured Blake and Maria in her mind. Just then, Maria opened the door to the room and screamed. Sanya turned around, almost falling in the process.
“Sanya, what are you doing?” Maria was afraid of walking closer to her. She didn’t want her to get hurt but she didn’t want to be the one that caused her to jump. No one could survive that fall.
“I’m sorry if this hurts you. I don’t really know you but thank you for taking care of me.” Sanya said as she let herself fall. It was the most peaceful feeling, the wind rushing past her whole body. She didn’t dare open her eyes for she was afraid that she would scream.
