Well, the $1 one could be a bidding war idea. It could flop for the owners, or not. Depending. And the huge acreage of land is probably something that can house horse stables without annoying your neighbors when it whinnies at 4am. You can also put up specific things, like a training ring or something like that. Possibly horse trails, too.
True I never thought about horses. WI used to be big with dairy cattle (I remember commercials as a kid that said, "Good cheese comes from happy cows. Happy cows come from Wisconsin." So I'd imagine they'd have a lot of horses too.
Horses on large acres are also good for profit. And if you have a lot, you can have the stalls several acres over, so the smell doesn't make you run screaming, but allows you to be close should something come up or happen. (They still have those commercials, just not as much as the California ones.)
Or sometimes people want to have extra space around them... or want to leave the land 'fallow', and undeveloped.
(IE, environmentalists who are trying to keep people from developing land, but doing it with their money, instead of or in addition to trying to use public laws/money.)
