You know what? A lot of people might disagree with what you did there, but I am going to have to totally agree. I know it might sound wrong for you to say something like that because people are always picking on you and saying bad things to you, which means you shouldn't say anything like that, but I think you deserve to "lash out" at people. You've more than earned the right to. Not saying people should lash out at one another (I know your's was a minor thing, hence the quotes), but I think you were in the right. I mean, had you guys made eye contact and you nodded at him, yeah, that's worthy of starting up a convo. Wanting to talk to someone doesn't give anyone the right to disturb someone who is busy reading or doing whatever. I am totally agreeing with you, regardless of what people say.
