Summary: Jiyong and Hongki best friends..
Hongki glanced over at the boy next to him, his best friends since- who knows since when. There wasn’t a time that he could remember not having Jiyong around. They were partners in crime, doing everything together, inseparable.
Their friendship was a weird, unexplainable one. No one could really understand how they’ve been friends for so long. They are both selfish, stubborn as a mule, hypocritical, contradicting, and always butting heads. They argue about anything and everything, can barely ever seeing eye to eye, they say hurtful things to each other, and at times claim hatred upon one another. Actually from an outsiders point of view, they are more like enemies than friends.
No, no one sees the little things the pair do for each other. They don’t realize that Jiyong ALWAYS give in in the end, doing whatever stupid thing Hongki wants, even though he knows they were both going to get in trouble for it. Nor do they realize why Hongki get’s so mad about GD smoking, they just assume that the younger boy doesn’t like the smell, but the truth was that Hongki didn’t want his friend to fall victim to cancer. People can judge all they want, but the laughter, the touches, the hugs, were only meant to be seen by the two of them.
Honestly, the pair could care less if other people understood their relationship or not. They knew what they were, they didn’t need friendship bracelets, matching tattoos, dying confessions of everlasting brotherhood. No, all they needed to do was stick by each other’s side. Words weren’t necessary for them. Actually, they’ve never even claimed one another as best friends out loud before. They just knew they were.
But that will all come to an end soon, Jiyong will be in America while Hongki will be in Japan, both trying to pursue their own dreams. And sadly, the dreams didn’t include each other. Neither wanted to talk about them saying goodbye, farewell, good luck with your life. And maybe that’s why they’ve been irritable to each other, even more so than usual.
Feeling eyes on him, Jiyong looked up, only to find Hongki starring at him. The younger boy have been acting kind of weird lately, actually he wasn’t the only one. He himself have been acting weird as well. The tension was there, left untouched, unspoken. Graduation was drawing near, as well as the date for their departure, the time kept ticking but neither of them were ready for it. They scheduled their flights on the same day, tomorrow actually, so neither one of them was the one being left behind, but that didn’t ease the process of them going separate ways. In a hushed voice, Jiyong whispered at the other, “What?”
Shaking his head, Hongki turned his head back to face the board. The teacher was talking about the end of the year party that was being held tomorrow. He really should be paying attention, probably even taking notes on this since he was on the committee and all, but his mind kept wandering to other things, mainly Jiyong.
About an hour or so later, the bell rang, signifying the end of class. Jiyong quickly got up and stuffed his things in his bag, ready to leave. He turned around, expecting to see Hongki standing there, waiting for him, but the other was no where in sight. Actually, he was the only one in the class now. Frowning at the thought of the other ditching him, he then remembered that Hongki asked to go to the bathroom a bit before the bell rang. Rolling his eyes, he reached over and grabbed the other’s things as well. He shook his head and muttered to himself, knowing full well that the other was not in the bathroom, “Aish… bet he did that so he wouldn’t have to carry his own friggin' books”
After grabbing everything, he slung his backpack as well as Hongki’s over his shoulder. He stood there for a second, debating if he should smoke a cigarette first but in the end he decided against it. Knowing full well that he would have to listen to Hongki bitch and moan about the smell. Instead he walked toward the school roof, resisting the urge to light one.
Hongki was laying down on a blanket, in the middle of the roof top, starring at the sky. He and Jiyong have been up there enough times to stash a snug little blanket that would fit the both of them. No way were they going to lay down on the germ infested dirty floor. The door creaked loudly as someone pushed it open. He knew who it was so he wasn’t that surprised when a foot nudged him on the side, “Scoot over fatass.”
Rolling his eyes, Hongki smacked the other’s feet away before he moved over a little, turning to his side to make room for the other to lay down.
Jiyong dropped the bags to the side before slowly laying down next to the other, fitting perfectly on the small blanket . His hand instinctively wraps around the other’s waist, pulling the younger boy closer, “Why’d you skip out on the last 10 minutes of class?”
“Hmmm” Hongki answered tiredly, relaxing his back against the other’s chest, completely use to the other‘s actions. There use to be a time where he would freeze up at every little touch the other gave him, but somewhere along the line he got over it. Well he kind of had to since Jiyong wouldn't stop. “I couldn’t concentrate on anything the teacher was saying, so there was no point in me staying in class.” It’s time like this that they'll both mis, the peaceful relaxing aura that surrounded them.
Just as Jiyong was about to respond - probably to yell at Hongki for ditching without him, his phone rang. Recognizing the ring tone, he quickly unwrapped his arm and sat up to get his phone. The song pierced through the peaceful air, annoying the crap out of Hongki. Jiyong wasn’t the only one to recognize the ring tone, Hongki did as well. But he just laid there, trying to ignore it as the other talked on the phone. He already knew what was coming, and honestly he didn’t want to hear it right now, so he shut his eyes instead.
Jiyong glanced at the Hongki’s tensed rigid body, he already knew the other was mad. This wasn’t going to be the first time he flaked out on hanging out with the other. Actually, it’s been a reoccurring thing lately, he always had to leave early and reschedule. Finally ending the phone conversation, he opened his mouth, “Hongki-ah…”
Hongki turned around, not even bothering to hide his discontentment, “What? I know. You have to go to another unexpected study abroad meeting.” He sits up and shrugged, “Whatever, I have other stuff to do anyways.” Which was true, he did have stuff to do but he canceled most of them. Minor detail.
Though he felt guilty for ditching the younger boy again, but seriously, what was he to do, these meetings were mandatory, even though they weren‘t really productive. He was irritated at how the other was acting - bratty like usual, “Jeeze Hongki, stop being such a girl.”
Hongki laughed, leaning over as he shoved Jiyong playfully, “Shut up you jerk, if anyone is a girl around here than it would be you. You totally look like one.”
Grinning, Jiyong stood up and walked toward the doors, leaving all his stuff behind, knowing Hongki would grab it for him. Just as he opened the door, he turned around and shouted, “At least I don’t moan like one~” He quickly walked through the door, closing it just in time as something hard slammed against it. Probably his backpack, a textbook, or whatever other dangerous objects Hongki could get his hands on. He shook his head as he walked down the stairs, “crazy bitch…”
Hongki dropped the fake smile and slowly walked to the railing, glaring down at a particular group of people. They were all the kids that were going to go study abroad with Jiyong. Not long after, Jiyong walked out of the double doors, greeting the group. Hongki rolled his eyes at the scene and looked away. He knew Chae-rin was down there, oh how Hongki hated Jiyong’s girlfriend. Well he only hated her because she hated him for no reason. He was completely fine with the girl until she tried to forbid Jiyong from hanging out with him, and he definitely hated the way Jiyong acted around her. He just assumed that she must be great in bed since Jiyong puts up with her, probably a dominatrix.
It’s stupid to get insecure about their friendship, him and Jiyong made fun of people like that, yet here he was… wondering if Jiyong realize that they are already growing further and further apart, they weren't even in different countries yet, “babo…..” Sometimes he wondered which one of them was really the fool, most of the time it was Jiyong. Hongki sighed, he walked back to put the blanket away. Guess his surprise would have to wait again.
-------
Jiyong tiredly walked home, the meeting today was really as useless as he assumed it would be. All they talked about were places that they wanted to visit, well all of them were going to be there for four years, why couldn’t they just decide when they get there. Idiots. He ended up just coming up with an excuse and left early. Chae-rin was a bit pissed about that but he was seriously too tired to put up with her today. All he wanted to do was go home and go to sleep.
Babo…pick up. Babo...pick up. Babo….pick up... Jiyong rolled his eyes as Hongki’s voice filled the once peaceful air. The younger other had obviously changed his ringtone again without telling him, he seriously had to stop letting the other with his phone. Rolling his eyes, he pulled out his cellphone, “What?”
Instead of Hongki’s voice, an unrecognizable one responded back to him, “Hey. ..is this Jiyong-sshi?” Fully alert now, Jiyong furrowed his eyebrows, this definitely wasn‘t one of Hongki and his common friends, “Whose this?”
“Ah.. Sorry to bother you, my name is Wonbin, Hongki left his phone here earlier and I don’t know where he lives or anything. You were the last person he called on the phone. And the only name I heard him mention before.. Anyways.. Can you tell him to come pick it up tomorrow before both of you board your plane? I know how he can’t live without his phone....even if it won't work in another country..”
Jiyong reached in his pocket to grab his cigarettes and lighter. “Yea. Sure... Uh.. What does he say about me?” Holding the phone between his ear and shoulder, Jiyong placed the cigarette in his mouth, cupping his hand around the tip as he light it.
“Huh? Oh nothing really… just uh… you’re lame and stuff.”
Jiyong's frowned deeped as he inhaled the cigarette, exhaling slowly after, “What? Oh.. Well I’m not.. But yea. I’ll tell him.”
“Thanks. Bye.”
“Later.”
Jiyong snapped his phone shut, trust Hongki to bad talk about him to others, but he never heard Hongki mention Wonbin before. Probably a new boyfriend, though if it was, it‘s weird that Hongki haven't said anything about it. Shrugging, he took a detour toward Hongki’s house instead. It wasn’t that far from his, just a block away.
-----
“UGH” Hongki let out another frustrated groan as he looked through the pile again. His phone wasn’t there either. He poured out all the contents out of his and Jiyong’s backpack, checked his bed, ransacked his whole room, yet his phone was still missing. Maybe he dropped it at school earlier, on the roof top maybe?
“Whoa. The hell did you do to your room?” Jiyong leaned against the doorway, grinning.
Hongki picked up a pen and threw it at him, “Shut up. I can’t find my phone.”
Jiyong quickly dodged it, already accustomed to Hongki’s tendency to throw random objects at him. Thanks to Hongki, he was pretty quick on his toes. Walking into the room, he plopped down ungracefully on the bed, “Maybe you left it at your boyfriend’s house.”
Hongki glanced over, giving Jiyong a weird look, “boyfriend?” He frowned and wondered who Jiyong was talking about, the last time he checked, he was still single. “What boyfriend? The last person I dated was Jonghun. And you know how that went.”
Jiyong scowled at the mere mention of Jonghun’s name. That relationship was a disaster from the get go. Jonghun was a sweet boyfriend to Hongki, yet at the same time he was way too possessive. Since that was the younger boy's first relationship, he looked past all the warning signs that Jiyong spotted early on. At one point, Hongki alienated himself from everyone except for Jiyong and Jonghun.
Somehow that relationship still miraculously lasted a good two years before Jonghun dumped Hongki. Boy, was Jiyong livid about that, what right did the other had to break up with his friend, it should have been the other way around. It was safe to say that Jiyong and his friends paid the boy a visit.
It was heartbreaking to watch Hongki recuperate from the relationship. The younger one was so stubborn about that relationship, holding on with that death grip of his that he never expected Jonghun to dump him. The thing about Hongki was that he believed in fairytales happily ever after. He wanted his first love to be his last one. And it wasn't.
Jiyong tiredly laid down on the bed, pushing the past out of his mind as he used the younger boy’s stuffed animal for a pillow, “Then whose Wonbin?”
Cocking his head to the side, Hongki stared at Jiyong, “How do you know Wonbin?”
“I don’t”
“Then-”
“He called me, and told me to tell you that he had your phone.”
“Oh”
Relieved that his phone was somewhere safe, Hongki stood up and walked to the bed, leaving the pile of mess on the floor. He climbed into the bed and nudged the other, “You stink”
Rolling his eyes, Jiyong pulled the other into a hug, “tch. I always smell good. Besides, there’s no way you can still smell the smoke.”
Hongki frowns, scrunching his nose as the smell got stronger, he broke out of the hug, “Yes I can. Now go change or go home.”
Too lazy to do either really, Jiyong pretended to fall asleep, hugging the pillow instead. Hongki frowned down at the other boy before smacking the other’s arm, “Give me back my pillow! You are going to make it stink!” tugs the pillow.
“Ow. Tch.” Jiyong let go of the pillow, but moved his head onto Hongki’s shoulder instead. Rolling his eyes, he pushed Jiyong hard enough that the other almost fell off the bed.
Quickly sitting up, Jiyong glared at the younger boy, “HONGKI!”
Unfazed by the other's glare, Hongki merely glanced at Jiyong, "You stink.”
Finally giving in, Jiyong climbed off the bed before the other really did push him off, “God you are such a girl.” Walking over to the drawers, knowing full well where everything was, he grabbed a pair of sweats and a t-shirt, undressing right there.
Hongki turned his head away, he always felt uncomfortable when the other changed in front of him. It was weird, it’s not like Jiyong got completely naked either. He just really didn’t like the idea of ogling his friend. Instead, he stared up at his baby blue ceiling, counting the glow in the dark stars. There were 50.
Jiyong, pulled off his shirt and turned around to throw it in the other’s face. Getting a better idea, he grinned and walked over to the bed topless, just to tease the younger boy. Hongki really did act like a virgin all the time, though if he is one is still up in the air. He climbed into the bed, surprising the younger boy with his bare skin.
“YAH!” Hongki’s face heated up, a deep hue of read as he tried to push the other away with his hand. “Go put some clothes on!”
Jiyong smirked at the other’s reaction, grabbing Hongki’s hand, he placed them down to the side as he leaned over him. “I don’t want to,“ looked down at the other with feign innocence, nuzzling his nose against the other‘s cheek, “What’s wrong Hongki?”
His breath hitched, surprised by the other’s action. Jiyong always had this way of making him feel like a little girl. Hongki managed to get one of his hands free easily, he quickly placed it on Jiyong’s chest, pushing the other back slightly. “Stop joking Ji. I’m seriously going to get mad.”
This was originally meant to be a joke, but somehow Jiyong’s mind was now filled with the thought of kissing the other. He lift his head and stared at the other, contemplating, before finally leaning back down to plant a soft kiss on the other's lip. Jiyong knew that he just crossed the line between friendship and into something else. What, he wasn't so sure about, and he knew that there would be no turning back to the way things once were after this.
Shocked, Hongki laid there unsure of what to do, slowly he responded, parting his lips against the other's. Feeling the younger boy relax, Jiyong deepened the kiss as he slid his tongue into the other's mouth, sensually sliding it against the other's.

Jiyong got dressed as quietly as he could, not wanting to wake the sleeping boy. He really didn’t want to say goodbye to the other, especially after last night, but it would be even harder to leave if the younger boy was awake. He walked around the bed, watching the other. If Hongki was awake right now, he could probably complain about what a sap Jiyong was being. Smiling softly, he whispered, “brat” as he leaned down and left a simple kiss on the other’s forehead, “don’t have too much fun without me.” He slowly pulled away, ready to leave. Just before he does so, he placed a simple white envelope on the bed, where he was sleeping not so long ago. With that, he forced himself out of the room, convincing himself that this was for the best, the other would hate him for a day, at most two, and in the end Hongki will forgive him.
BEEEEEEEEP. BEEEEEEEEEEP. BEEEEEEEEEEEEP
Hongki groaned loudly as the stupid alarm clock kept ringing, he tried to drown out the noise by placing the pillow over his head, but it was no help at all. “Ji….” he reached over, trying to push the other to turn off the stupid thing but his hand landed on the bed. Confused, Hongki quickly sat up, wincing as he does so. The pillow and the covers fell off of his naked body, he was in bed alone. Frowning slightly, “JI..?” he turned his head to look for the other boy, catching the ominous white envelope in the corner of his eye. Ignoring it, he decided to call the other instead. Reaching over, he grabbed his cell phone, holding onto the speed dial.
His heart started racing faster now as no one picked up. He eyed the white envelope one more time, not wanting to read it. He wouldn‘t, the other knew how he hated being left behind, Jiyong knew how much it hurt him when his mother left without saying goodbye, so Jiyong had better not of left already. This was different from getting ditched for a meeting, or Jiyong oversleeping - not showing up, this was too important, irreversible, “Pick up…come on…. Pick up…”
After numerous of attempts, and one long silent voicemail. That message said nothing yet everything at the same time. Hongki finally gave up. He took a deep breathe before he slowly opened the letter, already knowing what it was going to say, yet he still hoped for the best.
My little retarded Brat,
You know how I am with goodbyes, you saw how I was when I talked to my parents about leaving. I don’t want to go through the same process with you. So I didn’t tell you that I switched my plane ticket to an earlier time. I know you are going to be mad about this but I know you’ll forgive me for being selfish. I said we would go dig up the time capsule today but I can’t… not right before we leave. So we’ll go when both of us are finished with college and are successful instead okay? So you better do good in Japan or else I’m going to make fun of you!
Ji
Hongki scoffed at the letter, as if the other was going to be more successful than him in the future, “stupid…” slowly, the realization that Jiyong actually left started to sink in, he wanted this be different, but the letter itself was enough proof that the older boy was really gone. Drops of water slowly smeared the writing on the paper, confused, Hongki brushed his fingers slowly across his cheek. He was crying, the thought of himself crying was just ridiculous to him, he choked out a bitter laugh. He, Lee Hongki, who everyone called demon spawn, satan, brat, was crying. Laying back down on the bed, he placed his arm across his eyes, refusing to let anymore tears fall.
After buckling his seatbelt, Jiyong reached into his pocket to turn off his phone, frowning, he stared at the number of missed calls he received from Hongki, he decided to listen to the voicemail before calling the other back. The other probably left him a message stringed with every cussword that he has ever learnt, and then some. He moved the phone a couple of inches away from his ear before he started it, just in case the other was going to scream at him.
“……………………” was all he heard in that 10 minute long voicemail, no words, no movements, just silence. He gripped his phone tightly, waiting for Hongki to say something, anything instead of just the accusing silence that rang in his ear. Regret, guilt, and every other shitty feelings washed through Jiyong, he should of known the other wouldn’t be fine with this, actually, he knew, yet he still went through with it, “Fuck.” He quickly tried to call the other back.
“Excuse me sir, I’m sorry but the plane is getting ready to take off, please turn off your cellphone” The stewardess stood there, smiling politely as she waited for Jiyong to turn off the phone. Not having much of a choice, he hesitantly pushed the power button, turning off his phone completely. He’ll just call the other back when the land….
A couple of hours before his own flight, Hongki decided to visit the time capsule anyways, without Jiyong. He made his way to a vast field, with nothing but grass, flowers, and a tree smack dab in the middle. He made his way toward the tall, strong tree, stopping about 5 paces away from it. From there, Hongki took out his mini-hand shovel and started digging.
Honestly he didn’t want to reminisce about the past alone, he just wanted to throw some things in, for Jiyong to find in the future. After several minutes of digging, the shovel hit something hard. He pulled out a very old, graffiti filled, tin Shin-Chan lunchbox. All the memories of their distant childhood, that the both of them treasured so much seem to be placed in this little compartment.
Placing the lunchbox on the floor, he grabbed his backpack, pulling out a letter and an airline ticket. He placed the letter in first, starring at the plane ticket a bit before placing it in the lunchbox as well, whispering “surprise…” Placing the item back into the ground, he quickly covered it up.
