I vote epic troll, but I've been known to be wrong in my delusion that the mass of humanity is not completely awful.

I vote epic moron.

I covered the pets section beat for the newspaper I worked at and you would not believe how worked up people got about animals! I'd do stories about serious stuff like elder abuse, social programs etc. and no one would email me about it. But it was standard practice not to run the author's email with pet stories because we were tired of getting insane, ranting correspondence. This sounds like something someone would write in about.
