racism in fantasy worlds

I like the webcomic "Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire". One wierd thing about it that I've been noticing, though, is that the Orcs are incredibly remeniscent of stereotypes of Native Americans. They're nature wizards who wear leaves that look exactly like feathers in their hair and have a lot of drumming and dancing traditions, among other things. ( Read more... )

Yes, this a major reason why there aren't more geeks of colour.

Ursula K. Le Guin's people are almost all dark skined. (Including those in "A Wizard of Earthsea- which you have read even if you hated it) Tamora Pierce's circle books also have characters of colour and non-white cultures. These are exceptions though and not the norm. SF is also horribly sexist, though there is improvement.

I should read Ursula K. Le Guin's books again. People keep telling me how much I'd like her. Tamora Pierce I haven't heard of. I'll check them out.

You should definatly try "The Dispossessed'

As for Tammy her earlier works don't really address the iusses race. Try "Sandry's Book" and sequels though.
