Broken Piano 1
Kaisoo, Angst
His hands went numb...
His legs gave up...
What can love do when everything is broken?
Jongin has been Kyungsoo’s boyfriend for five years now. Kyungsoo was mesmerized when he saw Jongin dancing at one of their high school interschool competition but it was when they bumped into each other on the first day of college, that everything really started.
“Hi, I’m Jongin…” the tanned dancer introduced himself after helping Kyungsoo get up. “I saw you at the interschool competition…I thought I heard an angel singing, then I looked at the stage and there were you. I thought you were an angel, are you here to take me away?”
That was Jongin’s pick-up line to him and Kyungsoo’s quick wit replied with… “I saw you dancing that day too…your body moves in such sinful ways, just like a devil. I thought it would be you who would take me away…I’m Kyungsoo by the way…” Kyungsoo smirked at the boy who is still holding his hands.
They introduced each other in such cheesy ways and they didn’t feel awkward about it… it actually felt so right. They dated and eventually became boyfriends. After college they rented an apartment and started living together. Their relationship went good, of course there were the petty fights but they both learn how to deal with it.
Five years with Jongin and Kyungsoo never felt happier. Jongin would always dance for him while he plays the piano. Jongin would sometimes stopped dancing and just stare at him as his delicate hands tap the piano keys.
It was supposed to be typical Sunday for Kyungsoo, but he wakes up to the smell of waffles. He quickly got up to check if Jongin was trying to burn his kitchen down again, but what welcomed him was a dining table completely set-up, with mouth-watering food beautifully cooked. Jongin, who was wearing Kyungsoo’s Pororo apron, set the last set of waffles on the plate before kissing a surprised Kyungsoo and making him sit down for breakfast.
“Morning babe…breakfast?” Jongin placed random foods on Kyungsoo’s plate.
“What are you up to Jongin?” Kyungsoo looked at his boyfriend suspiciously.
“What?” Jongin chuckled. “Can’t I make breakfast for you, it’s all edible, I promise…” Jongin cut a piece of waffle and fed it to Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo was still looking at him with suspicion while eating the breakfast that he prepared. “I just wanted today to be special okay, stop over thinking…” Jongin grinned over Kyungsoo.
“And what’s so special for today?” Kyungsoo raised his eyebrow.
“Just finish your breakfast and you’ll know…” Jongin have this sinister smile all throughout breakfast.
Just as promised, after breakfast, Jongin lead Kyungsoo to a spare room in their apartment. It is where Kyungsoo’s piano is and where Jongin usually dances. The moment Jongin opened the door, Kyungsoo already wanted to cry. The floor was covered in rose petals and a projector shows him playing on the piano. It was taken last week, Jongin was bothering him to play and sing “All of Me” by John Legend, while Jongin records the whole thing. Jongin made him sit in the chair which was in the middle of the room, while he dances to Kyungsoo’s voice.
~~~~~You're my downfall, you're my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can't stop singing, it's ringing, in my head for you
My head's under water
But I'm breathing fine
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh~~~~~
At the end of the song, Jongin stopped in front of Kyungsoo, slowly kneeling down. Kyungsoo immediately understood what was happening and that’s when he started crying.
“Kyungsoo, you’re the best thing that happened to me, will you permit me to stay by your side forever?...Soo, I love you, please marry me…” Jongin opened the velvet box and showed it to Kyungsoo.
Kyungsoo couldn’t answer immediately, he was drowning in his tears. Kyungsoo threw himself on Jongin, hugging the tan dancer tightly, after a few sobs, he was able to finally speak up.
“Yes, Jongin, of course, YES!”
Jongin smile grew wide as he hug Kyungsoo back, he let go of him for a moment to put the ring on his finger and kiss his now fiancé. The kiss lingered longer than usual and they ended up at their bedroom and celebrated the occasion by making love to each other.
May 15th, Jongin makes his way to the music room to fetch Kyungsoo. They work in the same building, he teaches dance while Kyungsoo teaches piano lessons. Jongin lightly knocks on the door before opening it.
“Let’s go, Soo?” a heart-shaped smile welcomed him.
Jongin helps Kyungsoo with his bag full of music sheets, while holding his hands as they walked towards the parking lot. Jongin opens the door for Kyungsoo before going around taking the driver’s seat. They have an appointment with their favorite restaurant, a taste testing for the menu for their wedding reception.
It was raining hard and the road was extra slippery. Jongin was trying his best to drive safely but once an accident is evident to happen, it will happen no matter what. The car swiveled on the wet concrete, Jongin tried his best to control the car but it was no use. He saw a truck on the path of their evident collision and instinct took over Jongin. In a flash, he unstrapped his seatbelt and pushed his body to cover most of Kyungsoo. It happened so fast and before Kyungsoo can comprehend what was happening, the car they were on flew and flipped midair before crashing down, then everything went black.
Kyungsoo woke up in the hospital a day later, the first thing he does was to look for Jongin. Baekhyun, a common friend of both of them, ran to his side and tells him the truth. Jongin took most of the impact from the crash, securing Kyungsoo with a few broken bones, broken hand and a mild head injury. Jongin stayed in the intensive care unit for a few more days before he was transferred to Kyungsoo’s room.
Kyungsoo was happy to finally see him but also sad and terrified with how Jongin ended up. He had talked to Jongin’s doctor before hand and he knows his condition but seeing the damage first hand was devastating, because Kyungsoo knows how this accident will affect Jongin.
Jongin suffered a severe spinal injury causing his lower half to become paralyze. When Jongin woke up, he called Kyungsoo’s name right away, Kyungsoo, who was able to walk, got off his bed and took a seat next to Jongin. Jongin teared up once he saw Kyungsoo’s damaged hand.
“I’m sorry Soo… your hand… what did the doctors said, it’s not severe right, it will heal immediately right?...” Jongin was full of worry and guilt, he was the driver and what happened to them was his fault.
“Shhhhhh… Don’t worry about me Jongin, I’m fine. You were the one who ended up in the ICU, not me…” Kyungsoo gave him a reassuring smile.
Jongin assessed his body and that was when he realized that he can’t move his legs.
“Soo?...why can’t I move my legs?” Jongin looked at his fiancé and Kyungsoo’s glossy eyes were enough to answer his question.
“Jongin…” Kyungsoo was fighting his tears, how could he tell his fiancé, Jongin who loves to dance, that his lower half was paralyzed and that he might not be able to dance again…ever.
“I’m paralyze, am I?” Jongin heartbreakingly asks Kyungsoo.
“Jongin, don’t worry, we will get through this…” Kyungsoo hugged Jongin. Jongin hugged him back, he was secretly thankful it was him who got paralyzed and not Kyungsoo.
The doctors explained to Kyungsoo that with proper surgery, his hand can still be saved, but Kyungsoo refuses it. He doesn’t want to go through surgery, not when Jongin’s suffering more than him. He asked the doctors to keep this from Jongin, but what he doesn’t know was Jongin already researched about his condition and found out about the surgery. Jongin also heard him refusing about the surgery, at first Jongin was confused why but then he looked at himself and he instantly knows why Kyungsoo refused.
“Why are you refusing the surgery Soo, is this about me? Kyungsoo, please I want you to take the surgery…”
“I’m okay, Jongin, I don’t need it…” Kyungsoo tried his best to smile.
“Then let’s break up…so you don’t have to think of me and you can get the surgery…” Jongin suddenly blurted out.
“What?...Jongin…that’s absurd…”
“NO!!! Kyungsoo can’t you see I’m holding you back... you don’t even want to get treated....the longer you resist surgery the harder it is for you to recover and play the piano... piano is your life Soo... Don’t throw it all away...” Jongin almost screamed at him.
“WRONG Jongin!... you…” Kyungsoo held Jongin’s face “…you are my life...so don’t you dare break-up with me just because of that, don’t you dare leave me…”Kyungsoo leaned in and kissed Jongin.
