As far as I know, your friend doesn't have any recourse. It's a private sale. He signed the papers so that the other guy is now the legal owner of the car, correct?
Wish I had more positive input on this situation, but I'm afraid I don't. :(

I know in the states it's a criminal offence to write a cheque when there's insufficient funds... Not sure about here though. :/
