I have long felt the same way as you with the whole sheltered place in a foreign land concept. Recently, all of my coworkers (the ones that grew up here in Singapore) have been pushing me to check out some of the resorts in neighbouring countries. Until now, I had actually been contemplating doing it (it's only $300 for a nice weekend getaway from here).

I met them on the way back at the airport, and they had a fantastic time living in various villages renting houses and going to local stores, markets etc. Sounds like the experience you are looking for.
