I totally just did a New Years meme.

Jan 04, 2010 02:42

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
published a paper, finished a paper at six AM, sat in the front row at a funeral, booked my own hotel, cooked with vegan meat-replacement products, convinced myself I was having a heart attack, sent unsolicited mail to someone I've never met, had a seriously painful allergic reaction, got the flu, got a respectable score on the Gateway purity test, ate at the Patricia Hotel Steak Pit, ate a live meal worm

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make new years' resolutions.  No, really.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope, zero babies.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandma on my mom's side.

5. What countries did you visit?
Puerto Rico, the USA... um, Canada?

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
A man.

7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I... do not remember the date of a single important thing that happened to me this year.  Not one.  And some important things happened.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Deciding where I wanted to go with school.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Getting a real summer job.  Also, being kind over the telephone.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Mmm, well, I got the swine, but it wasn't that bad.  And I guess I rubbed some kind of zinc compound all over my stomach and then reacted to it, which sucked for weeks.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Mmmm.... the one dollar I spent renting Pocahontas conveniently right before I got the swine.  Also, The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Luke, Jaimi, Michael, my mom.  Mostly everybody.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Josh.  Simon.  Ed Stelmach.  Some people.

14. Where did most of your money go?
school, books (but not school books), impulsive shopping, travel, Earls

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Puerto Rico, the sixth Harry Potter movie for some reason, Cortona (which hasn't happened yet), Campus Chase

16. What song will always remind you of 2009? Cold Bread, Year 3000 (sorry about that one), Lollipop

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a. happier or sadder? both.  but mostly surer.
b. thinner or fatter? the same.
c. richer or poorer? richer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
sleeping, being outside, listening to music, cuddling, seeing friends of all sorts, writing things down, taking pictures

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
sleeping, working, worrying about that History of Palestine course, worrying about other things

20. How did you spend Christmas?
At home with family.  Pretty quality.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Luke

22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
No, I think I fell out.

23. How many one-night stands?
zeeeero.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
SUPERNATURAL.  Also BSG, also some other stuff probably.  But mostly Supernatural.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No.

26. What was the best book you read?
Oh my goodness.  I cannot do it; I am going to give you my top ten instead.  In no particular order: Beloved by Toni Morrison,  Stranger Music by Leonard Cohen, Songlines by Bruce Chatwin, and  Ulysses.  In the weirdo nominations category:  Emma by Jane Austen, and Daddy Longlegs by Jean Webster.  In the 'fuck it, yes, these books were embarrassing but I would also fight to the death to defend their legitimate and surprising greatness' category: When the Duke Returns by Eloisa James, and City of Glass by Cassandra Claire.  In the 'just fuck it, that's not even a book' category: Topspin, and the Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry, Volume One.

So  there you go.  READ ALL OF THEM THEY ARE ALL THE BEST.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Beck's Record Club.  JOHNNY FLYNN.  The song "Matty Groves" as preformed by Jason Wilson, who I rather dislike.  "Meet Me at the Equinox" by Deathcab for Cutie (yes okay it is from the New Moon soundtrack and I LOVE IT ANYWAY).

28. What did you want and get?
Some decisons made.  The Show that Smells by Derrick McCormack.  My very own copy of Mr. & Mrs. Smith -- finally I can stop trying to borrow that stupid movie from everyone I know.  A little scholarship money.

29. What did you want and not get?
A boss Zefron poster.  Among other things.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
As in, released in 2009?  Between Up, HBP and 17 Again.   I guess I was in the mood for... vaguely juvenile.  Although I have to say these were not my favourite films that I saw this year.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I am pretty sure that I turned 20, but I honestly cannot remember what I did.  Like, not at all.   I suspect I did do something for my birthday, though.  I kind of forget the entire month of July, except for a few isolated scenes which definitely didn't involve my birthday.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Eh, some things.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
During warm months, dresses and skirts and cotton!  During cold months, large sweatshirts/sweaters and probably no bra.  For a few particularly awkward weeks, toques.

34. What kept you sane?
Mostly Luke's constant readiness to tell me when I wasn't staying sane.  Michael's willingness to let me yell at him for hours on subjects he found completely bewildering.  The Bruce Peel Special Collections Library.  To a lesser extent, an entire playlist of obnoxious songs by Mika, naps taken while lying face-down in direct sunlight, one particular walk I took by myself, and flannel sheets.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Um, the first-place winner in this category is too embarrassing to own up to.  I will tell you that a strong second-place tie goes to Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Urgh.  None of them.  Unless you count these vague stirrings of nausea I am feeling just thinking about politics in the last year.  I kind of couldn't watch, and then it was okay because I didn't have time to.

37. Whom do you miss?
My uncle.  My grandma.  My old dog.  Various people whom I've been missing off and on for years.  Chris, maybe, kind of.  Jaimi Reese, who I never get to see enough of.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Brian.  He works at the Derrick and I LOVE HIM.  Despite his unfortunate choice of employment.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Just finish it, however you've got to, whatever it is.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I believe in heaven, it's a way away.

Or alternatively,

It'll never be said in fair England
That I slew a naked man
