I'll always have that reaction. It's just how it's going to be. A few years ago on the show House had to saw someone's leg off. And the sound of the buzzing . . . it was all I could do to sit there. Felix's whole tragedy will always get to me. Always.
A few weeks ago a prisoner was executed by firing squad on the show Oz. It was less upsetting but it was not . . . great. I actually kept remembering the "X" on Adama's chest. It was quite harrowing that arc.
Weirdly, I think I'm more sensitive to it now that we're a few years down the line (crap, has it really been years?). Maybe because I had to watch the arc several times when I was plotting my reaction fics. I was a little inured to it at first. The exposure therapy has since worn off.
I know what you mean. I watched that arc three or four times around the time it aired for my own ficcing and betaing purposes as well, and I got to a point where I could see it without flinching. But damn, I was not expecting my heart rate to react the way it did.
.... Speaking of, did you ever finish that fic? (Says the girl who still hasn't finished Truth on Our Side...)
Mark's reaction was complicated. He adored Felix, but he was a hardcore Adama/Roslin shipper. He was ultimately Team Snowflake, but he didn't take any of the vicious pleasure in Gaeta and Zarek dying that half the fandom did at the time. He saw their point of view, he just didn't agree with their methods.
Still, I couldn't bring myself to continue reading the reviews, because I knew he'd be squeeing about Adama/Roslin and it was the post-mutiny episodes that made me hate them both passionately.
I don't pretend it never happened, because I honestly love the mutiny arc, I really do. I thought it was brilliant and amazing and (aside from a few questionable moments of writing- come on now, let Gaeta list all of the legitimate complaints against Adama, not drag up New Caprica,) damn near perfect. Even the executions.
It was the episodes that came next that pissed me off, with the complete disregard for examining any of the reasons a mutiny erupted or why the majority of civilian ships were on their side.
I think my problem is not being able to separate out the mutiny from all the remaining episodes. From Dee's suicide to Kara's poof there's just so much of Season 4.5 I just stop watching at Revelations and write 4.5 the way I want it (except when I write something like to Kindle a Light in Darkness).

Dammit, show, why do you have to be so quality that you affect me on a visceral level years after you've ended?
