IN my next my Southern Living "Outbuildings" post, I will talk about the high water table here and the fact that basements were therefore nearly unheard of. Another facet of building in this hot climate is that the homes have vents in the crawl spaces, or just are set on blocks to allow air to circulate under the floor, cooling the house

We had a developer buy some land about a mile from here which included a new house -- they moved it to the other side of the road, turning its exposure 180 degrees, so that the developer had access to all the land.

I always wondered about this, but your explanation makes so much sense: the houses aren't permanently attached to the ground, so they can be picked up wholesale (if one is careful).

Completely alien to me, but of course I've never lived anywhere without a full basement.
