Is the gallery owner the jerk who screamed over the phone, or was that an underling?
Maybe you should give them a list of unreasonable demands. You'll come back if they give you the $500 you were expecting, a raise, fire the guy who screamed, etc.
The only person I've ever dealt with is the owner directly, which is why I said even under the best of circumstances, I won't go back: there's no other person I can negotiate with, and this fellow is unreasonable. He's not bad, he's just really not meant to be a business owner: doesn't do paperwork, keep careful records of his inventory, doesn't have much impulse control... those things are okay in a middle manager, but in the top dog, they're draining.
Proof that he's not a bad guy-- he IS telling me how awesome I am in these phone calls: he just gets pissed that that doesn't work.
HIM: You're really talented, come back. ME: No. Sorry. It's not working out. HIM: But I asked nicely! Plan B is just telling you to fuck off.

(repeat, ad infinitum, apparently)
