The 'Other' Side of Australia

Qantas treats the five-hour flight like a long-haul journey. We are fed at odd times, and the lights are turned off in the late afternoon in order to mess with our melatonin. The two-hour time difference is slight but a difficult one to adjust to; for the first few days I wake up around 4.30am and can never get back to sleep ( Read more... )

Oh dear, the sand gropers' lament about those god awful Easterners. They don't seem to recall that for many decades the "rust" bucket states financed WA and still do through income tax redistribution. If NSW and Victoria got all the tax back that their taxpayers paid we wouldn't have these massive infrastructure problems.

I'd like to go and see New Norcia it sounds interesting. I just hope there are no dark shadows in their past, like that of the Christian Brothers at Bindoon, The magnificent looking building at Bindoon was designed by a monk from New Norcia but unfortunately it was built by child slave labour, the children both physically and sexually abused by the Brothers. New Norcia sounds a much cheerier place.

To be fair, I heard little grumbling myself, but then, I didn't interact with very many native WAians.

Hmm, well, there could be. There were four schools because there was one for each gender and race, i.e. Aboriginal or white. The monastery was first and foremost a mission, and seems to have worked quite peaceably with Aborigines, but there are always shadows lurking, aren't there?

It's really interesting to hear about the places you've been visiting; I don't know a lot about Australian history. Also reminds me that I'll have to hurry up and get my holiday pictures online; there's a good set from a lovely monastery we visited in Groningen...
