Fires of Pompeii

Nov 24, 2008 20:59

It has been super cold here lately (cold for me at least) -- it got down into the 20s over the weekend!  We have a fireplace in our new apartment and decided conditions were right for us to test it out -- a cozy Sunday night at home with a fire.  We bought one of those artificial logs at the grocery store and it burned nicely for a while, but our ( Read more... )

oh no!!! If it's warm enough, try to keep your windows open as much as possible. It'll help with the smoky smell.

It's getting warmer so we've been doing that... Thank goodness. And vacuuming up all the ash (which got everywhere! Just like Pompeii) has been helping.

I'm in a basement apartment, too. Hopefully you get a little bit of light...

You know, it's been 10-20 degrees colder than normal down here, apparently, and the same back home. I guess the East Coast is just having a general cold spell.

Fireplaces are often smoky, and they're not very efficient house-warmers, either. But, um why the choice of fire extinguisher for putting the fire out?

We didn't know how else to put the fire out... The log was fully in flames and the fire extinguisher was right there... I've only ever dealt with fires while camping so the concept of where the smoke might go, or that a fire extinguisher itself would create a mess, didn't even occur to me. :(

I don't approve of the gigantic temperature variations we had today. I need to learn to just dress for how cold it's going to be when it's dark, since that's when I'll be outside, and just ignore the afternoon high temp.

Your fire story (and the picture) remind me of the West Wing episode where Sam and Josh try to light a fire in the White House. So you're in good company! :D

;lsjflksdjflsjd;f Can I apply to the Obama administration and list that as a qualification -- my fire-making skills? ;) Actually, my experience with this fire is no kind of recommendation. They'll want to stay far away from me.

Totally! That's one resume line that'd make you stand out in the crowd. :)

I think they mostly wanted to make sure we weren't burning to death. It was pretty alarming at how much smoke was coming out of our windows and front door...

Also, what exactly is that on the tv?!

I hope y'all can get everything cleared out soon. Just breathing that in must really suck. It's really cold here right now, but we're supposed to have mid-fifties on Thanksgiving, so maybe it will warm up there, too!

It's a character in an episode of Doctor Who. Very apt, since the ep was about Mount Vesuvius erupting.

I think it was in the 40s today, which felt balmy in comparison to the weekend! And cold is better than stinky smoke, so we've been leaving a lot of the windows open and pretending like we're camping. ;)
