I also downloaded several Science Friday podcasts, but hadn't gotten to them yet -- they look promising!
Diane Rehm I actually go out of my way to avoid, purely because I don't like her voice. :/ I know it's awful of me because she had some kind of throat disease and recovered, but the sound grates on me. One of the local traffic reporters had a similar effect and I would actually rush across the room to shut the radio off rather than listen to this person's voice.
Her voice used to bug me too, but I've gotten used to it, I think because of all the times I've heard her interview some person who was trying to weasel out of a question and she very politely said, "But... what about..." and nailed them. So now I'm like, "Hah! You think you can weasel out of answering because she talks slow, but she's totally got your number!" :D
That's good to know -- I love it when journalists push for an actual answer. When lawyers are in court, judges get PISSED if we don't directly and succinctly answer exactly what they asked, so hearing any kind of evasiveness makes my skin crawl. I know politics is different than arguing in court, but I'm glad she's out there hassling people.
I drove home from work on Monday, but the Metro crash was still pretty scary. I have several friends who take the Red line out to Silver Spring, but thankfully they're all okay. All the things I've read about disregarding safety recommendations about older model trains and possible signal failures is quite worrisome, so I really hope they're able to get the funding to fix those things.
That's great that you're able to get more active again! Hopefully you can find a good balance of doing the things you enjoy and keeping your back happy.
Also scary because soon that will be your main Metro line, right!
I don't feel comfortable on the older trains... Or on the ones that smell like permanently mildewed. (I suspect there's a correlation between the smelly cars and age...)
Yep, it will. To get home from campus I'll be on that exact Fort Totten to Takoma stretch.
If it's smelly and has orange seats, it's definitely on old one. The front car on Orange line trains tends to be old, in my experience, and that's usually where I sit on the way home.
I think they're going to change things up so the front cars are no longer the oldest, weakest ones. I'm consciously going for the middle cars now... I hadn't realized the end ones were more vulnerable. Eek!
Thanks for checking in - I saw Miss Daisy's post and figured you were almost certainly OK but it's good to hear it from you :)
It's great your back's doing better, and best of luck with the weight loss. I just bought a dress (not a bridesmaid's) for a friend's wedding this summer. It was so much fun trying stuff on, now that I've lost enough weight to actually look nice in some of them!
Ack! Edited because some typos just cannot be allowed to stand.
This dress is especially frustrating because it's a model that runs small in the bust but that's where my body runs large (which is endlessly annoying and I'll edit myself from further griping here) so I had to buy a dress several sizes larger than I normally would have and then will have to get it altered. Adding to the cost and the hassle. Argh. I know my friend was trying to make dress shopping easy and inexpensive for us, but that's not how it's working out. :(
I was thinking of you the other day, but knew the accident wasn't near you. Still happy to hear you're doing well, though, and especially that your back continues to improve.
I love my NPR. I might look into downloading some of those podcasts - they sound pretty interesting.
