The phone was ringing and Orlando tried to wake up; for past few weeks, he had felt so tired and he couldn’t understand why. For the last six months, he had not been occupied with any film or work, so he thought he would be rested. It didn’t help that he had started to feel sick every morning.
He wished that the caller would just hang up.
“Yeah, who’s calling?” he said as he finally picked up the phone. It probably sounded as bad as he was feeling. He tried to push down the nausea he had started to feel from the minute he woke up.
“Been out partying again?” said the cheerful voice on the other end.
“Hey, mate. Actually, no, I’m just a little tired.” He hoped this wouldn’t take long, even if he loved every second that he could talk with Elijah.
“You tired? You’re kidding me, right?”
“No, I’m not. It’s true. It has gotten worse everyday it seems, maybe I’m about to get the flu or something.”
“Orlando, you don’t get the flu, you never get sick. Have you decided yet what you will do the rest of your time before you start filming again? It’s been too long since our last meeting. Can’t you come over to LA and be with your precious friend? You know that I haven’t got anything going on for a while and I do want to have fun. We can take in some waves, bungee jump and whatever else you would be keen on. You know the weather is perfect here and they have promised that the coming month will be as good as the last has been. I do miss the time we spent together. I didn’t think I would be the type of guy to admit that, but I love you and the crazy things you always seem to be up to. I like that it is different from what Billy and Dominic are making. …”
Orlando listened to Elijah’s monologue and tried to fight the rising nausea, but felt all too soon that he wasn’t having any luck with it.
“Elijah, I have to go, I will call you later!” He didn’t wait for an answer, hung up and hurried out to the bathroom. He made it at the very last second and threw up. He didn’t think this boded well.
*~*~*
Two weeks later, Orlando didn’t feel much better. Every single morning it had been the same procedure; waking up, feeling the nausea, and within half an hour, he needed to go to the bathroom and throw up. The flu he thought he had hadn’t broken out and he had started to get really worried about what was causing it. He had to get well, because in two weeks time, he was supposed to start working on his next film.
He was so worried about it; he called his agent to see if there would be any danger to the filming. Robin recommended that he make an appointment to see a doctor. He thought that was wise and agreed to do it as soon as possible.
*~*~*
He got an appointment for two days later. He didn’t want to go there, but was worried that he had caught something serious that would make him unfit to film. That was the last thing he wanted; so he did think it was better to go than be in the shadow of not knowing why he felt as he did.
The doctor seemed nice and asked a lot of questions about his current state. He also asked why Orlando had not gone for help about this earlier.
Orlando felt comfortable during the exam. After some tests, the doctor stated that Orlando had lost some weight, but couldn’t say anything else other than that Orlando had a low blood count. The doctor assured him that it was easily remedied with a prescription to increase the iron level in his blood.
Orlando questioned the doctor about why his blood count was so low. The doctor said it could happen from time to time and that the iron levels sometimes got low. In Orlando’s case, it probably had to do with the fact that he had been vomiting. The doctor continued with saying; “Sometimes, it can appear when you are stressed or haven’t slept well.”
Orlando sat in silence and took in the information he was given.
“Though, I don’t think you should worry,” The doctor assured him.
With some relief, Orlando went home and started to take the medicine. He hoped the doctor was correct in saying that he was healthy and that the nausea would probably not last long.
Somehow it seemed to be working and during the following weeks, he started to get better, the nausea and some of his tiredness disappeared. Even his appetite came back, though it appeared that he had to stay away from barbecued food. Orlando found another side affect of his state, he started to notice that his sense of smell was more sensitive. The smell of aftershaves and perfumes made his stomach turn inside and out.
*~*~*
The filming had started three weeks earlier and Orlando was feeling better, even though he couldn’t keep up the long working days as he been able to the year before. After eating, he often dropped exhausted on the bed and slept until the alarm woke him up for the next day.
Orlando dressed himself one morning, but had trouble buttoning his trousers. He noticed that he had started to get a bulge around his stomach. He couldn’t believe that he could have put on so many kilos; stranger still was that the weight was only gathered around his waist. He had never had that problem before.
Sure, he had put on weight for the role of Balian, but most of it had been muscle. However, he had shed most of that while he was ill. Recently, he had been happy to have regained the weight, so he hadn’t been alarmed at first when his clothes had started to feel tighter.
Orlando felt embarrassed when he had to ask the dress maker to let out his character’s clothes. It wasn’t solely jeans and trousers; it included the shirts and jackets too. The girl shot him a confused look, but when she saw the sincerity in his face, she asked him to undress down to his boxers so she could re-take his measurements. She did notice that he had gained weight and the measurements weren’t the same as last time.
“If you had been a woman, I would have said that you were pregnant,” she joked with him.
Orlando turned crimson red at her comment; He pregnant? That couldn’t be true! It was impossible!
“I probably just have to watch what I’m eating. Though, I seem to be hungry all the time,” He retorted and started getting dressed.
“You’re starting to get old, right?”
“It must be that.” But, he thought to himself, that shouldn’t start to show yet, he had only just passed 30…
*~*~*
“Please, darling, listen to me… This is important… Ouch!” Orlando stopped in mid sentence.
“Cut, cut, cut! Orlando, what the hell is wrong with you? It's not just that you have gained weight, but you also seem gloomy and cannot even remember the simplest of lines?”
Orlando was about to reply to the director, but he felt the pain again and it made him stop speaking. This time, it was harder, which made him fold over and take hold of his stomach. It felt like something had kicked him from inside his abdomen.
Orlando knew that he had been troubled lately and probably not acting like himself. He still felt fatigued, even if he tried to look after himself and rest. His back seemed to hurt more than usual and he didn’t think it was caused from the weight he had gained.
“Orlando, what is it? What is happening?” The director’s voice was deep, full of worry. Orlando hadn’t acted like this before. He wasn’t known for making trouble while filming.
Orlando tried to rise, but suddenly everything around him spun and went black. When he awoke, he was lying on the couch and most of his works mates had stopped what they were doing and seemed worried about him. If he hadn’t felt so exhausted, he would have gotten up, but he wished only to sleep.
He heard the director call out ‘break’ and dismissed the people away with a wave of his hand. It was embarrassing for Orlando to have caused them to stop. Orlando took a few deep breaths and it seemed to help. His stomach seemed to be calm now and he thought he must have imagined the whole thing.
The director wasn’t convinced when Orlando told him the pain was over and had Orlando sent to a doctor.
*~*~*
The meeting with the doctor was the worst he had ever had; it topped even when he had broken his back. It was so horrible that he went home and locked himself in his room, away from everything.
Thinking better of things, he made a few phone calls to avoid having a search party sent out after him. He called the director and said he wouldn’t be able to finish the film and would let his ‘people’ handle the broken contract. He called Robin and told her what he had just done. She was furious, but promised to fix the mess. Though on one condition, that he come to her as soon as possible and told her the truth.
Among the calls was one to his mum telling her that he wouldn’t be able to talk with her for some time. He cut her short when she wanted to know why and ended the phone call quickly.
Then, he went over the information he had received, over and over again. It was unbelievable, though it did explain the kicking. Since then, he had felt the need to have his condition repeated several times over, to ensure that the doctor had made no mistake.
The doctor had done a very careful examination. He had taken the time to examine his stomach and ordered an ultrasound to reveal what the doctors suspected. Orlando had been showed the results and the doctor had printed out some of the pictures. Holding them in his hand meant that he couldn’t deny that he was carrying a child.
He was fucking pregnant. A freak! He felt that he was in a very, very long nightmare. He didn’t want to believe it was true, but the picture from the ultrasound and the movements from his stomach confirmed it. He couldn’t deny it.
*~*~*
Two weeks went by and Orlando couldn’t stand much of anything. He didn’t feel sick enough to stay indoors, though he would never, ever want to show himself on any film set. He hated even walking to the grocery store.
He wasn’t certain if it was only in his thoughts that everyone looked at him strangely. It felt like his condition shouted out what a freak he was. He dreaded the day someone would catch it on film and then spread it though the tabloids and over Internet. When that day came, he knew he was doomed.
He had been brooding over how this terrible thing could have happened to him. A male person shouldn’t be able to get pregnant and carry a child, they weren’t created to do it; though he was living proof of it.
He thought about it every day, it was more and more visible. He did hate it, but nevertheless, somewhere deep inside him, he knew that he would never be able to harm it. He wanted answers and to come to a conclusion as to why, who, where and when the fateful thing had happened that had made him pregnant. He was clueless about it.
Orlando pondered the same things every day with no progress. So one day, when the baby seemed to be livelier than usual, he cursed at it and came to think of a very small incident that had happened Neither he nor his brother in crime had given it a second thought, as neither of them was superstitious.
Orlando decided that he needed to sort things out. His self-proclaimed house arrest was over for some time. When he had decided what to do, he knew that the first thing was a trip to the clothing store. He definitely needed clothes that could cover his condition, and when it would be inescapable, he hoped to be somewhere away from prying eyes.
*~*~*
Orlando looked around and saw that no one was near by, so he rang the bell and nervously waited for the door to open.
“Orlando! … What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be filming?” It was a very surprised Elijah that opened the door.
He surprised Elijah even more when he drew him into a tight embrace and gave him a big, deep kiss.
“Are you out of your mind? Didn’t we agree to keep our relationship secret?”
“Please, Elijah, haven’t you missed me?”
After the shock, Elijah hauled Orlando in and closed the door. He answered Orlando’s question with a new, warm hug and deep kiss. Then he felt it and froze. Elijah took a few steps back and looked Orlando up and down, and the fear showed from his eyes.
Orlando was scared too, but he was determined to get everything through to him. He took hold of Elijah’s arm, dragging him into the living room and then pushed him down onto the coach. For a short moment, he thought it might be better to maybe pour a large scotch and offer it to Elijah, but decided that he wanted him sober. It was enough that they had been under the influence of alcohol the time when this disastrous thing must have happened.
“Orlando, can you please explain what is happening?” His blue eyes seemed to be even bigger than usual.
Orlando took a chair and dragged it opposite of Elijah and sat down as comfortably as he could. He took several deep breaths before he started to tell his theory.
“You know our little vacation trip to Haiti, don’t you?”
Elijah nodded.
“Also the night we had too much to drink?”
Another nod from Elijah.
“You know what we did... That we sort of got caught in the act… and the ‘bokors’ pronounced something that sounded very much like a spell.”
Elijah’s face confirmed the story Orlando told. He did remember their little ‘rendezvous’, though he couldn’t get a word over his lips.
“I think I know what the ‘bokors’ did, that it was indeed a spell he placed. I know that we didn’t take it as seriously as we should have and now I have to pay the price.”
Orlando couldn’t hold the tears away any longer so he let them run, he hadn’t wept about his situation earlier and his feelings had been in turmoil for so long. Elijah could only stare at him. He had never seen him this way and he suspected he didn’t want to hear what price had to be paid.
After half an hour, Orlando had collected himself as much as he possibly could, and was ready to continue to tell Elijah about the situation.
“The spell made me this…” He opened up his clothes so Elijah clearly could see that his stomach wasn’t flat and had a large bump.
“You… you… you‘re pregnant!”
“Yes, Elijah, I’m with child. I can’t think it could be anyone else's other than yours.”
“B… bu… but it would be impossible. H… how long?”
“If I count right and the doctor confirmed, it is about 5 and half months.”
“Why didn’t you say anything earlier? We could have fixed it. Is it too late now?”
“I learnt the truth about it two weeks ago, after I fainted on set and felt the movements for the first time. I had forgotten the spell and I remembered it two days ago. How cruel it is, it is a life and I will not take it.”
“Do you say that you want to go through the whole pregnancy?” Elijah lost his temporary paralysis and he began to pace back and forth; every other second he glared at Orlando.
The uneasy feelings Orlando had influenced the child inside of him; who awoke and started to kick furiously. He put his hands over his stomach in an attempt to calm it down.
“Yes, I will, and if you do not want to be with me, I will accept it. I really thought you would want to help and support me.” Orlando’s tears started flowing down his face again when he saw that Elijah’s reaction was what he had feared it would be; rejection.
Hearing the sobs and seeing the tears got Elijah to stop his pacing. The news was overwhelming and he felt he needed to digest it, but his feelings for Orlando made it clear that he couldn’t leave his lover in this condition. His love took over and he walked to where Orlando still was sitting and sank down on his knees and hugged Orlando.
“Please, allow me time to let this fully sink in and we can discuss the future?” Elijah said in Orlando’s ear.
Orlando tried to nod and got the tears to stop. After a while, he tentatively asked if Elijah wanted to feel the child. When a hesitant hand slowly rested on his stomach, Orlando moved it to where it was most active.
Elijah almost withdrew his hand when he felt the first kicks. It was a special feeling and he did think it was amazing, though he still wanted time to accept it. After a minute, he took his hand away and rose from his position.
With Elijah’s feeling their child, Orlando wanted it to believe it was a good sign and his feelings started to calm down. He slowly relaxed, and cherished the feel of another person touching him. That was something he had missed in the last two weeks; comfort from another being, even if it meant he would stand alone during the coming months and possibly the entire year.
The little moment was broken by Elijah telling him that he would go outside for awhile to think. Orlando didn’t stop him or try to follow, after knowing for himself how he had reacted to the news of his condition. Right now, Orlando was glad he hadn’t been thrown out.
*~*~*
A few hours later, Orlando woke from his sleep on the sofa when the door had closed upon Elijah’s return. Orlando didn’t want to give himself away; especially not knowing which state Elijah might be in.
Orlando was very tense and nervous about what Elijah’s conclusion would be. Would he want to take his part of the responsibility? Would he want them to be together? Or had Elijah decided it was enough and pay him off to save his reputation and career? To never want to see him again? Though they would probably need to come out with their relationship if they wanted to be a family for the child.
Orlando saw how Elijah went into the dark kitchen and was momentarily lit up by the refrigerator light when he took something out; then he slowly walked past the living room opening and continued to where his bedroom lay. Orlando could hear him open the door and say in a low whisper; “Orlando?”
When no answer came, Elijah walked to his bed to feel his boyfriend and when he was met with an empty bed, it alarmed him. He couldn’t believe that Orlando would chicken out after what he had confessed to earlier. Elijah lit the bed lamp and saw that the room was empty. He turned and went out searching the rest of his house, turning on every light source he passed. It hadn’t occurred to him that he could call for Orlando again; instead, Elijah went first up the stairs to his second floor. No sign of Orlando greeted him.
To his despair, Elijah went back down to brood over the fact that he was alone and hoped that Orlando would come back the next day. He went into his living room and was greeted by the man he had searched for.
“Why didn’t you answer me when I was calling for you?”
“I was asleep and the light disoriented me when I woke up.”
“I thought you had chickened out and didn’t want to hear what conclusion I had come to. Wanna hear it?”
“Of course I want to hear it, why do you think I’m still here?”
Elijah stopped, watching Orlando, letting him worry about his decision a little longer. Elijah noticed that Orlando had changed some of the baggy clothes he had worn when he arrived. The new clothes showed clearly in what condition he was in.
One of the things Elijah had asked himself was what he would think of to see Orlando in this state? Would he hate it; though he hadn’t any of those feelings now. He really thought it looked very enchanting.
“Orlando, I love you and I wouldn’t want to lose you just because you carry our offspring. It is a very rare thing, but I’m very much up for trying to make this work. I think we can begin tomorrow and discuss everything to plan our future.”
