Are you sitting down?

Those who know me know that I am a voracious reader and have read quite a few authors. But one author I have never got into reading nor do I understand the fascination for is Jane Austen. I mean I have tried but I can't get into her books. I mean I love Dickens and Hawthrone and other writers of that time frame ( Read more... )

Now, see, the one you should rent is Mansfield Park with Francis O'Connor(A.I and Bedazzeled) and Johnny Lee Miller (TrainSpotting and Dracula 2000). *Drool* I am convinced that this is the best Austen movie ever made. You get a feel for her humour as well as social commentary. Sorry to say the A&E/BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth, will always be Mr. Darcy in my mind) as the best version of that story. Did I say Colin Firth *herat flutter...gasp for breath... swoon* Which is why he was such a perfect man for the modern re-telling of P&P (i.e. Bridget Jones) to play...dumdumdum...Mr. Darcy. *snicker*

hehehe... Kiera Knightly is weird looking :P

I'm so glad you liked it though, Pride & Prejudice is by and far the easiest of the Austen novels to get into. A lot of her work is subtle social commentary and isn't meant to seem as dry as it does to a modern reader.

Oh - that version was awful! You really need to read the book. I, at least, couldn't put it down.

I loved Pride and Prejudice! I just read it for the first time too! And I liked the subtle social commentary on women and how they had to marry to be financially supported, and a bunch of other things. Really spoke to the condition of women at the time. And Sage, I salute you for overcoming your He-man-ness in order to read Austen :D

Gah, I read your post wrong- you have rented the movie but not read the book yet. Well, read the book; it's even more thought-provoking than the movie. I read the book after seeing the movie with Keira Knightly. I didn't think the movie was bad at all.

How could you succumb? *shakes head with disappointment*

I'm afraid Jane and I will never get along. I'd rather go out with Shakespeare than befriend Austin - sorry.

*ducks the rotten tomatoes* HEE HEE
