I suppose it's not normal for someone to be upset at the point of sickness because their cat had to stay longer for a potentially life threatening illness

That would be the problem with depression. Even when you think you have a handle on it, and your doing well, the wrong trigger, no matter how big or small, sends you back to hell again. And even if you know it's coming, it's impossible to ward it off. I was told you should try to accept the depression, and ride with it rather than fight it again. Don't really understand how that's supposed to help, but that's what I've been told. Just hand on and remember that all things come to an end, and keep to the sun. It really does help.
Let me assure you it is pefectly normal. GG means the world to you. I have done much more/spent more money for my previous cats than anyone would ever think is normal. I loved them more than words could say. A pet you love is someone you love, not "just an animal".
And of course that kind of thing can trigger your depression and make it worse, and that's not your fault. And it doesn't mean you haven't been getting better. It's just something bad that came up, you will get better again. The fact that you know your triggers and are able to avoid them is a very good thing.
