yeah interesting to contemplate in the face of the news today about the US Prez saying he will authorize the summary killing of Americans suspected of being an immediate threat in terrorist organizations...
what happened to ...some sort of trial? Or accusations? or did the big happy of killing Osama Bin Laden change the rules?

Maybe there is a pattern for all presidents (their executive branch) to push the envelope of due process and checks and balances when it comes to foreign policy? Dr Torture teaching there at UC Berkeley law school: exhibit A. And once down a path it can be hard to reverse ... Gitmo: exhibit B. The job of congress and the courts is to push back against the executive -- checks and balances. But I fear our civil liberties are slowly being subverted. ACLU is going to fight the current executive memo.

Anyway ... opera is relevant! May it live forever.

A Portland jury convicted our local teenage terrorist last week of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction (Portland Christmas Tree lighting 2010 was his intended target). It was a bad decision. I say there is an affirmative duty of adults to guide kids away from disaster. In this case, they gave him all the rope he wanted. If he wasn't entrapped, he sure as hell was "enabled." Enabling is not a legal concept I guess ...

So there is an ugly mood throughout the populace, and we get the consequences of our inattention.
