It's important to maintain an understanding of your surroundings, especially if you travel through here. It's vital to be able to fit in when you need to, and if you're going to flaunt local customs and mores, at least do it consciously, rather than through ignorance.

As for pulling rank on a friend, it would depend on the issue. And, of course, the friend.

Ah, Samus. In a way, he's glad to find someone who has intelligent answers. On the other hand, she's known to have Logic Bomb capability...

"Adapting to a new location is one matter. I am more interested in changing standards within one's native environment." He pauses before deigning to use a simpler term. "That is, fashions."

The second matter being more serious, Issek speaks slowly, taking time to frame it with greater care. "Assume the purpose is to protect them from self-destructive habits they have acquired."

No. I know that tone. You're trying to phrase something delicately, while leaving out most of the relevant information. Omit names if you like, but good advice needs some detail.

A flicker of puzzlement from the scientist. Corsets? A second to check his host's memory and he snorts. "Fortunately, that has already been done. There seems to be no preventing such changes. However, I have succeeded in holding out against them until recently."

Issek folds his arms and gives her a frown. Of course, by this stage anyone at home would have guessed exactly who he was talking about. Thereby complicating matters intolerably. He's rather protective of the details he can withhold. "I only require a general answer."
