Like we here in the States and especially where I am from Alabama and South Carolina, have grew up being exposed to firearms.I was taught how to shoot almost before I learned how to ride a bike

I suppose its just because the original quote was made in the context of gay men. As far as "gay rights" I have to take a stab and say it was set up as more of an attention getter.
