I can never understand why people confuse Peter Hammill with progressive rock nonsense. OK Van der Graaf Generator did three albums in the early seventies (Least we can do; H to He and Pawn Hearts) which you might class as prog rock. But these are the worst things Hammill ever did (apart from the odd song on each album). None of his solo stuff can be classed as Prog and non of the other Van der Graaf. I mean they haven't even got a lead guitar player, keyboardist or drummer each wishing to perform nauseating solos! Hammill never fitted that prog mold.
If you are still listening to the likes of Yes, Genesis and Marillion then you have missed the point of Hammill altogether. Instead listen to Robert Wyatt, Scott Walker, Roy Harper, Jacques Brel, Nick Cave, Kevin Coyne, Kevin Ayers etc. These are the sort of musicians which Hammill fits with - each one individual and never sold out.
Please let's free Hammill from the curse of the Prog Rock label. It makes it embarrasing to admit that one is a fan. I honestly believe that in time Hammill's music will become respected (although it might be after he's dead unfortunately) whereas all that prog rubbish will always be seen for what it was - pretentious nonsense!
