I've looked at Final Fantasy X ending countless time and still cried over it, I'm weird like that. I blame the music and the fact that I followed the Original Japanese version closely. I just looked at the 'Normal' ending of Final Fantasy X-2 again, and I compared them to the English version

I think it's because "I love you" in the English genre traditionally is a much more heart-baring statement, whereas we say "thank you" when someone passes us a napkin. It's sad, but we don't often use "thank you" the way you describe. We'd have to add something like: "I'm so very grateful...thank you, from the bottom of my heart," to make it clear that we mean more than a casually polite noise.

Nevertheless, I really hate it when things like this get changed.

I guess the difference in cultural is obvious here. But "thank you" can actually give more impact to people who have feelings for each other as compared to "I love you", which has become cheesy or just, well, I don't really know how to say it.
