I just got off the phone with my brother.  in the process of telling him that i might have a new job offer, i mentioned that i've been calling someone my "brother-in-law".  He got upset that I would spend time with a family that I'm not even a member of and not even visit them

I don't quite understand why family is possessive like that-- Rissa's family does this sometimes to her, and the only effect it could possibly have would be to push her away.

That said, the problems you've described in your family are about average. If you say you want to be normal, BING! you've got it.
