HP:DH Theory Number 1: The ships.
As in relationships. I thought I'd get this one out of the way, since fandom is overly concerned with who does and does not end up together.
This post runs down my opinions on who ought not to be together, those couples I hope get together, and what I think is actually likely to happen.
Ron and Hermione get together, of course! I think they have staying power, too. There are a mounting number of marriages that began as sweethearts at Hogwarts, as Molly pointed out in HBP, many of them in response to the last war. Somehow I suspect Ron and Hermione will be one of the new couples that sticks it out to the inevitable conclusion. There’s too much that’s gone on between them for it not to stick. Unless one of them dies, that is, but that’s another theory for another day.
I think they’ll have a similar dynamic as Ron’s parents. Loving, and snippy with Mrs. Weasley ruling the household and Mr. Weasley being adorable and somewhat bumbling. I completely see Ron having the same attitude as his father towards child-rearing, scolding his kids in front of Hermione while in private asking them “Just how cool was it??” Hermione, meanwhile, has already perfected that affectionate ire that makes Mrs. Weasley such a perfect mother for her horde of Weasleys.
The difference will be in Hermione not settling for being a house wife and mother. She’s not the type to be satisfied with that, at least not forever. Knowing our girl, she’ll be packing lunches, seeing Ron off to work and the kids off to school so she can set the house to cleaning itself and get some REAL work done. After all, what’s six or seven kids compared to a career as an Auror, or something high-level in the Ministry of Magic? Or even continuing her work with S.P.E.W. Pish posh, Hermione can get it all done and still be home in time to bully Ron into helping her make dinner.
Moving on, now.
Wouldn’t Neville and Luna make the cutest couple? No, seriously. Okay, fine!
Harry and Ginny? I hope not. I sincerely hope not. I don’t know what it is about Ginny, but I just don’t like her. Not that I like any of the girls JKR has set up to put in Harry’s path. Cho? Immature, totally not right for Harry. Ginny? A slut, to be quite blunt, and not a little bitchy sometimes. Someone once pointed out that the spells Ginny is best known for are all hexes and jinxes.
Harry and Luna? Maybe. I’d be happier with this one, but while the latest movie has made it my definite favorite of all the possible Harry pairings, I just don’t think ‘weird’ is one of the qualities Harry’s looking for in a girl. Not to mention, at this point in time she makes Harry too uncomfortable for him to think about her in a girlfriend sort of way.
Do I think Harry and Draco are going to end up snogging in a cold, dark room somewhere after emo!Draco reveals to Harry just how terrible things have been as a Junior Death Eater? Um. No. Oddly, I find the idea of Nargles much more believable. Honestly, people, give it up. There will be NO same-sex pairings in Harry Potter. The closest JKR has come to touching on the subject is having Dudley accuse dead Cedric of having been Harry's boyfriend, which we all know was not true. NO, IT WAS NOT TRUE. You, over there writing the fic where Harry and Cedric get it on in the Maze. I WILL whap you.
Personally? I HOPE Harry doesn’t end up with anyone. 1) All the Hogwarts marriages are getting on my nerves, no matter the reason for them, 2) They’re so YOUNG to be forging their lifelong romantic bonds and 3) Harry will really need some time to himself after the, oh I dunno, almost SEVENTEEN YEARS OF TRAUMA he’s lived with since his parents died. I’m sorry, Dumbledore, but no one can be truly emotionally healthy after everything Harry’s been through. Loving, yes. Healthy? No.
In all actuality? It’s very likely Harry will hook back up with Ginny the moment everything is all said and done. If they’re both still alive, there won’t be any reason that they see not to get back together. Damn. If things follow in the Hogwarts strong relationships pattern, and not to mention if Harry is to have the same sort of happiness his father had with his mother, then he’ll marry her. Oh look, Harry (who looks like James except for Lily’s eyes) with red-head Ginny (like Lily’s red hair). It’s perfect.
