By now I think most HP fans have come to the same conclusion: The R.A.B. who stole the locket Horcrux is none other than Regulus Black, Sirius’ brother. I’ve also seen it decided that the locket located in Number 12 Grimmauld Place, the one that wouldn’t open and which Mundungus Fletcher has probably stolen, is the Horcrux in question.
Who was Regulus’ accomplice?
You see, Dumbledore made a very revealing statement in that cave. He said one person alone could not have done it, could not drink the potion, get to the hidden Horcrux and then get themselves out alive.
So. Who helped Regulus? Someone had to, whether that someone drank potion or made Regulus drink it, someone else had to be there. Not to mention, unless it’s a self-refilling potion (which I doubt, since Voldemort would want to know it had been tampered with), then it would have to be manually or magically replaced.
I think Regulus is the one who drank the potion, for it is stated that he didn’t live very long after leaving Voldemort’s service. I don’t think Voldemort killed him at all, I think either the potion weakened him enough that he died, or his accomplice ended up killing him to spare him more suffering. I don’t think Voldemort killed him, because (as Dumbledore also pointed out) he would have wanted to question the person who got to his Horcrux, and I think Regulus’ condition would have tipped the Dark Lord off to something being fishy, and he’d have asked questions. As we saw with Dumbledore’s condition, anyone who drank the potion would be weakened, in agonizing pain (mentally as well as physically), and quite ready to do anything that would stop their suffering, including answer truthfully anything the Dark Lord asked.
As Voldemort seems not to know the Horcrux is gone, I think it’s safe to say he never found Regulus Black, never questioned him and didn’t kill him. My bets are on a mercy killing from his accomplice, who would almost surely also be a renegade Death Eater. Any other witch or wizard would have gone straight to Dumbledore (if they were smart) or the Ministry (if they were not) with their knowledge and the locket.
Harry and his friends will have to find the accomplice to find the locket. Maybe the accomplice doesn’t have the locket anymore, but he or she will tell the Trio where it was, and knowing that, they can then start looking for Mundungus. If it’s so easy for the readers to figure out who R.A.B. is, then it can’t be too difficult for Harry or (more likely) Hermione to make the connection to Regulus Black. From there, it’s Harry’s knowledge of what one had to do to get the Horcrux that will lead them to the existence of an accomplice.
After that, who knows? But there is an accomplice, of that I’m 95% certain, and he or she will be important to the location of the locket Horcrux.
Before anyone starts asking, no, I will not be making any theories this week on what the other Horcruxes are, especially not on whether or not Harry himself is a Horcrux. All I will say is this: I don’t think Voldemort is the type to give up, and it’s possible Nagini is not a Horcrux at all, and there is something of Ravenclaw’s AND Gryffindor’s in the Dark Lord’s possession. That’s it. No more Horcrux theorizing for me.
