A Condensed Musical Guide to Nirvana and The Foo Fighters

Oct 06, 2016 01:31

Note: I am not requesting Nirvana this year (2024); this post was originally written in 2016 and I don't feel like editing it that far. 🤣

I have decided to create a pimping post for both of the bands I will be nominating and requesting so I have an actual chance of getting them/being surprised, bundling them since Dave Grohl forms a bridge between the two bands. Nirvana and the Foo Fighters! I never thought there would be a time when Nirvana were not well known, but the lack of fanfic about them online certainly speaks of this.

This post will assume you have at least a tiny bit of knowledge of the two bands' existence. (In other words, I'm not writing an entire history of either band. You can Google that yourself if you need to.) It will mostly focus on pics and music to give you a better idea of what each band is like.

Be warned, this post will have many, many pics and tons of YouTube videos in it.

Nirvana formed about 1987 in Washington state. Although I love every album they put out, my requests deal more with the time Dave Grohl was the drummer for the band, since I would like interaction between him and Kurt Cobain. He joined the band in 1990.

As I said, I love most of Nirvana's songs, some more than others. Here's a sampling of some of their best. I don't know any other way to present them than YouTube vids; if you can't see YT vids in your country, I'm sorry. Do you know some other way you can listen for free?

Anyway, at least one song from each album/EP.

"You Know You're Right," an extra song released years after Kurt's death.

Personality video: IMO, Kurt's personality is hard to pin down. At times, he could be gregarious and enthusiastic, talking about his music and art, a person who really seemed to care about other people. At other times, he could be a sarcastic, selfish, enigmatic jerk. I'm leaving this one up to you. Dave is easier - if you're willing to listen, he loves to tell stories and ham it up. This video has some particularly funny moments.

The part where Dave does the accent while molesting everything on the food table was especially funny. Although, I'm not squeamish about germs, but even I was going, "No, come on Dave, not the ice, other people have to use that OH both hands in the ice!" XD

As you may know, Kurt died in 1994. People debate to this day whether Kurt really committed suicide or if his wife, Courtney Love, had him killed and then his death staged to look like a suicide. We'll probably never know for sure.

After Kurt's death, Nirvana disbanded and Dave eventually put together the Foo Fighters. I don't have pics to illustrate every representation of the band because I'm mostly concerned with Dave/Taylor Hawkins interaction. The band's first album came out in 1995 and they've been going strong ever since, so they have a large catalog of music. This is why some albums have only one song to represent them.

Dave became the singer and guitarist of the band because he figured no one wanted to hear the drummer sing lead (and he's an amazing multi-instrumental musician). Taylor became their drummer in 1997.

People are currently questioning what the future of the Foo Fighters will be with the sudden death of their drummer Taylor Hawkins in March of 2022. This group has played together with Taylor for over 20 years; they are a family.

The band continued on, put out another album, and replaced Taylor with Josh Freese. This all went a little fast for me and I still haven't gotten used to the changes. The album has some good songs on it, but one of my favorite bands has been changed forever. They were a huge source of pleasure and fun for me, and now such a source of painful emotion. The only thing that makes me feel better is living in their past.

Let's take the time to listen to a small sampling of their music catalog.

If you were not aware, Taylor has a great singing voice, and has sung with a few side bands. The best of them is Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders.

There's also now NHC (Navarro Hawkins Chaney), which features Dave Navarro, Taylor Hawkins, and Chris Chaney. They barely got the chance to do much when Taylor suddenly passed. :(

PHEW.

Personality video: There are tons of interviews with the Foo Fighters on YouTube that illustrate what Dave and Taylor's personalities are like. This one is a definite favorite of mine. Warning for bad language. (Dave loves the F word!) From 2008.

This next part gets really sexual, so warning for language! The funniest part is at 5:28 when the interviewer asks if either of them were asked to play drums on a Led Zeppelin reunion tour, would they do it, and Taylor says that Dave would "suck cock" for the honor of playing with the remaining members of Zeppelin. Dave does not miss a beat; he jumps right in and describes how far he'd go with the blowjob for a chance to play drums for Zeppelin while Taylor says Dave would even do some "salad tossing" for a chance like that. I didn't even know that slang for rimming - how does Taylor know it?? XD Taylor continues by adding Dave would be willing to "take it up the ass" as well, to which Dave replies, "For the whole tour?" XD The way they interact and play off each other so effortlessly is great.

I hope this post gives you a good overview of both bands.

Any questions?
