Okay, I just saw the movie Milk; so while that's obviously why I'm writing this, I'm asking seriously, because it has always bugged my that people hate and condemn each other and it will continue to bug me

I wholeheartedly agree. Just make sure that you make the distinction that only a certain portion of "Christians" believe in this manner. I can't tell you exactly how much this portion is, but I know that it is not all of them, or even anywhere near all of them. I call myself a Christian (Though I admit I am not a typical one), and I make it a point to condemn and judge no one. This is a direct order from the person for whom the religion is named. But people have the annoying tendancy to ignore the parts of the religion that don't allow them to kill and punish other people on a whim. This is a blight on all major world religions, and is one of the sources of the fact that there are so atheists in the world. People view religion as an excuse for violence, not a reason to spread peace, and this is probably the worst thing about humanity

First of all, I think that human beings are fundamentally tribal in nature. We tend to stick to our own (commonly held beliefs, socio-economic status, taste in entertainment, etc). We wear badges which identify ourselves to each other (haircuts, clothes, slang, hybrid vehicles). It was a successful survival strategy for human beings in the pre-civilization phase - which wasn't all that long ago, from an evolutionary point of view
