As you probably know, Oliver Twist has now been made into a movie, and is about to come out (is it already out?). It is the first American film made in a long time by director Roman Polanski, the director of Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown, whose wife, Sharon Tate, was among the victims of Charles Manson's gang.. I imagine several of you (the various ( Read more... )

His movies are amazing, though.

The Pianist,
Ninth Gate... probably some others.

I think the french respect his art so much that they overlooked his perversity. Perhaps as penance for ordering the death of Marquis De Sade?

This is why I can't stand artists. "Well, he raped a little girl, but he makes really good movies, so...All is forgiven! Viva le Revolution! Viva le France! Viva le Satan!"

Have you seen his version of Macbeth? Awesome.

It is true that his wife was murdered by the Mansons. It is also true that he saw Nazi's drag away/kill his Jewish mother as a child during WWII.

Perhaps he belongs in a mental hospital. Not prison.

Regardless, his derangement has nothing to do with the quality of his art. No need to wage this dumbass, moral crusade on him. Dostoevsky had a thing for young women, too, in addition to other odd fetishes. Does that make "The Brothers Karamazov" any less amazing?

I can only assume this is Matt "The Most Offensive Person I Know" Keefer, and that he forgot to log in.

You can't judge the man by the quality of his work, any more than you can judge his work by the quality of the man. Michael Jackson is a good case: freaky insane pedophile, but a damn good musician. Hate the man, love his music. Right?

Just because you have this weird love for everything wrong and immoral in society doesn't mean we should let people get away with crimes because they're rich and famous. He still committed a serious offense, and he should be punished for it. Ok, he's a great director, so let him make movies, but let him do it from prison. He did something wrong, and I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that you think he shouldn't be punished.

I don't know this person you mention. But, judging from what you said about him, he sounds like a sharp fella.

At any rate, I am not suggesting he shouldn't be punished; just that his punishement should not involve boycotting of his films.

But yeah. Drugging and raping children is not to be condoned. Cut off his balls, throw him in prison with the sodomites. But let us keep watching Rosemary's Baby. That movie kicks serious ass.
