Ikki woke up with a start, not quite knowing at once where he was or what woke him up in the first place. When he took in his surroundings, his heart sank in his chest. That was his favourite moment of the day, when waking up so he was able to pretend for just a little while that it had all been a bad dream. He sat up at once and got up from his place on the floor. He had found out rather quickly that it was no use trying to hold onto that moment for any longer. When it was gone, it was gone and lingering in bed often got him into more trouble that day. It just wasn’t worth it. When he walked outside, he realized it must still be very early since the sun was only showing a faint glow at the horizon.
When he heard a little sob, he walked around the hut and found Esmeralda sitting hunched in the chicken den, crying nearly silently. He quickly joined her and kneeled by her, taking her hands from her face so he could look at her.
"What’s wrong?"
She looked up at him with those huge eyes and he thought again how young she looked. He hid a quick chuckle when once again he realized he was only twelve, and she must be a few years younger than him. Of course she looked young. It was just that he often felt so much older than he was.
"She won’t let me take her egg. If father finds out, he’ll be angry at me and tell me it’s silly to be afraid of a stupid chicken."
Ikki smiled because she could imitate her father quite well, she had the intonation down absolutely right. It was funny to hear that high voice say things like that. After the smile came a little shiver, let’s hope she didn’t start saying other things her father said.
"Don’t worry, I’ll help you get them."
He shooed away the evil chicken and let her get the egg, which she carefully put in the basket with the rest of her morning’s work. When they walked back to the hut together, she was her own cheerful self again until they found her father waiting for them, his arms crossed over his chest. Esmeralda obviously paled and was all at once the quiet child she usually was around her father. He frowned at them both but Ikki raised his chin defiantly and stood before Esmeralda. His master’s eyes grew cold at this and he growled.
"I think you can use a morning training, don’t you? Esmeralda, prepare breakfast, I will be back soon. The boy won’t need any."
Esmeralda stared after them with large eyes, biting her lip. It was her fault that Ikki should now be punished. She really had to try and be stronger, like Ikki himself. It was just… she wasn’t stronger.
By the time her father came back inside, she had baked a few eggs and had cut the bread which was left over from the day before. She had made him fresh orange juice and while he was eating and seemed to have mellowed a bit, she dared ask him her question.
"Daddy? Today the boat comes with the groceries. I was wondering if Ikki could help me bring up the stuff here. I’m out of flower and if I want to start on the bread for tonight and have it ready on time, I won’t be able to get everything up here on time."
He frowned again but she met his gaze steadily. No matter how evil he sometimes looked, he had never hurt her and she was sure he loved her. He would never do anything to harm her, so even if he sometimes scared her - like that morning - she never really was afraid, not deep in her heart. At that moment, they heard the horn of the arriving boat and her father nodded. She quickly got up from her chair, gave him a quick kiss on the forehead and ran outside, grabbing her apron in passing.
A few minutes later both children were walking towards where the boat docked and saw that the men were already unloading their supplies onto the small pier. Before they were down there, Esmeralda took Ikki by the hand and pulled him away from the path, out of sight from the men down by the water and from her father. She took a piece of bread and cheese from the pocket of her apron and handed it to him.
"Here, I saved this for you."
Ikki shook his head.
"I’m not supposed to have any breakfast today."
She pushed the food in his hands. "It was my fault you got punished in the first place. I’m just stupid to be afraid of that damn chicken. I’ll try to be just as brave as you. But please, eat it."
Ikki hesitated for another moment, then gave her a huge smile and dug in.She smiled back and watched him eat with satisfaction. After merely a few minutes, he had finished and they continued on their way down. It took them nearly two hours to haul everything back up to the hut and by then the sun was high in the sky. The children were both soaked with sweat but her father took Ikki back outside the moment they had finished and put him back to his training. They only came back in for lunch and after that immediately went back outside until suppertime. It was only when the sun set on the horizon, that the training was over. After the sun was gone, it usually grew pretty cold pretty fast, but Ikki always stayed outside for a while, admiring the starlit sky. This night Esmeralda joined him and they sat together for a while without talking. Ikki thought that this day had been full of good things and figured that maybe tomorrow he’d get up early and help Esmeralda with her morning chores before he had to start his training. He looked at her and she immediately turned her head toward him and gave him the most beautiful smile. He smiled back and figured that maybe it hadn’t been such a bad thing to have been sent here after all.
