I heard this song called "Clark Gable" by The Postal Service, and I thought I'd share the lyrics. I found them to express a sentiment I've been really familiar with of late.

must we really kill our camel? Another method might be to observe its course, gauge the distance between oases and discover the map of the desert. perhaps then you can know your own path

I don't think we must destroy our beliefs. Sometimes they just fall apart. If the corpse of the camel isn't clung to then sometimes we can witness reality. But in the mean time, while our beliefs are alive and well, I think that the method you speak of isn't a bad one. It may be a bit mistaken, but I think that as long as we keep honest and accepting and non-judgmental about our observations, we're on the right track.
