While doing a little research about a potential trip to North Carolina this spring I found out that it is still a lot cheaper to take the train than to fly. I come from a train traveling family, not because anyone in my family is afraid to fly but just because my parents like to ride trains. I so agree with you about this. Granted I've not travelled by train nearly as much as you have, but a year or so ago I took the train to DC and it was the most pleasant travelling experience I've ever had. I felt like someone had gifted me 8 hours to read and relax and the sites on the way down are things I never would have seen if I had drove even.

though I guess another thing is I have sort of developed a fear of flying... but the enjoying train rides came first.

And you can get up and walk around, stretch your legs, get something to eat in the snack bar, etc. All things you can't really do on a bus, plane or car.
