Something tells me there's a lot more to this still to come. Am I right?

The main way I'd recognise that film of smog is from the Chinese Grand Prix - everything looks just fine at the circuit, but the switch to a panning aerial shot that shows Shanghai reveals it to be permanently cloaked in a malevolent haze. Delhi wasn't much better when the F1 circus decamped to India for a couple of years as well. And now, as I watch Formula E, much the same shots for Beijing as for Shanghai show pretty much the same as what you have above.

Take material floating hazy object as the standard.

Yeah, I'd agree that China looks better in the closeup than the wide angle shot. Unless you enjoy the novelty of looking directly at the sun, an activity that you can't really do in Australia or the UK in my experience.
