Dad's computer has gone coo coo for cocoa puffs. Yesterday it popped multiple explorer windows (though you could only see them in the task manager; iexplorer.exe). He ended up doing a system restore, but the following is still showing up ( Read more... )

Boot sector virus... annoying. You need to reload the bootloader before you do anything else. The easiest way to do this in Windows, unfortuantely, is to reload the OS.

hmmm... stealth_boot is in entire family of viruses that infect the master boot record. The original code was meant to infect the DOS part of the system. Here's a possible resolution:

BOOTSCAN.EXE is available for download from http://vil.nai.com/vil/virus-4e.asp (as part of the EMSCAN.zip download)

Shut down the PC and turn the power off. Obtain or create a virus free boot disk and scan disk. After booting, at the A:\ prompt, execute the following command:
BOOTSCAN C: /boot /clean

After this is done, go ahead and try booting normally, then run a full virus scan immediately to clean up any other infected files. Any floppies put into the system while the virus is resident may have been affected as well.
